Max Underdown of Bandon earned his junior black belt on Oct. 24 at a ceremony at Coquille Community Center.
Max, age 12, has been working more than four years toward the achievement. His next step is to learn the adult self defenses, which include defenses against gun and knife, and to solidify everything he needs for his adult black belt test. That test includes sparring five minutes against five different black belts, one minute against each foe. That tests both endurance and character.
“Our juniors end up being very well-rounded and proficient martial artists by the time they test for their adult black belt,” said Jim Saxton, Max’s instructor at Coquille TKD in Bandon.
Under World TKD Federation standards, students cannot test for adult black belt until they are 16. Most wait until they are 18.
Also receiving belts and certificates during the ceremony were Misty Huffman (orange belt), Tianna Huffman (blue belt), Brendon Thrash (yellow belt) and Franklin Smith (first poom certificate).
