Police narrow sights on school vandalism suspects

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office has recovered 20 computers stolen last month from Pacific High School north of Port Orford.
The soggy laptops were stashed on a suspect’s property five miles from the school in a gorse patch, sheriff’s Lt. John Ward said in a press release Wednesday.
With the property recovered and the school cleaning up thousands of dollars in vandalism, the Sheriff’s Office is urging the Curry County district attorney to press charges against more teenagers believed to be responsible.
Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a 19-year-old Port Orford man for first-degree arson, two counts of second-degree burglary and aggravated theft. Police believe he fled to Oklahoma, where authorities are assisting in his arrest, Ward said.
The sheriff’s office also is asking District Attorney Alexandria Streich to continue pursuing a case against two Port Orford teenage boys. One, already in custody on unrelated matters, could be charged with first-degree arson, aggravated theft, second-degree burglary, furnishing alcohol to minors and first-degree trespassing, while the second may face second-degree burglary and first-degree trespassing.
The charges stem from a three-night crime spree in mid-October, in which teenagers broke into the school, stole laptops and set fire to the building, Ward said. There was also damage to the school’s cranberry bogs, greenhouse and water tanks.
Police last week arrested a 16-year-old boy, 17-year-old girl and 13-year-old girl on suspicion of criminal trespassing and criminal mischief in the case.
The DA and Juvenile Department are investigating the case, and more arrests may be pending, according to a press release.
