Scammers bilk local woman

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 |
Attorney General John Kroger and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office are warning Oregon families about a phone scam that targets elderly grandparents.
The Sheriff’s Office has reported three cases locally in which con artists, typically males, call grandparents posing as grandchildren stranded in Canada or in some sort of trouble. They ask the victims to wire money to them immediately, according to a press release.
A Coos County woman sent $10,000 to a man Monday morning, a Sheriff’s Office press release said.
Kroger identified several red flags that may indicate a scam. Be skeptical of a caller who:
• Asks you to wire money anywhere.
• Claims to be stuck in a foreign country.
• Insists on secrecy or gets personal details wrong.
If you may have been a victim, call police or call the Oregon Attorney General Consumer Hotline at (877) 877-9392 or visit
