Avoidance won't end overseas war

Our military waits for Obama to act on his commanding general’s request for more personnel. These additional troops are needed to effectively defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan.

While our brave men and women in uniform wait for reinforcements, Obama set a new record for the most golf played by a president during his first nine months in office. These golf trips and the countless cocktail parties the Obamas throw (at taxpayer expense of course) are probably taking so much time away from the president that he doesn’t really have time to worry about the military. These soldiers in Afghanistan or elsewhere could be my son or daughter … or yours.

I find Obama’s inaction cowardly, despicable and frightening, though not unexpected from a man who has no experience running anything in his life and subsequently little experience making decisions. This country is in desperate condition with a inexperienced waffling socialist president and a Congress whose focus is to spend our money, raise our taxes and further divide us on racial, ethnic, religious, economic standing, union/non-union and just about any other wedge  they can drive between us.

Well, Obama is going to escalate the war in Afghanistan and stay in Iraq. He's the Lyndon Johnson of the new millennium.

They are his wars now.

So much for Hope and Change.

Afghanistan produces 98% of the world's heroine supply. The sale of Opium funds the Taliban. The drugs cause millions of deaths world wide yearly and the drug wars, crime and costs are in the billions. However instead of doing the world a favor and bombing the Opium fields the US is chasing the local tribes in circles in the name of democracy. What a joke. Corrupt American
make as much money by supplying weapons to fight the Taliban as the Drug dealers who profit from our protection. An American pays $1500.00 for an AR-15 rifle while the Taliban pay $8.oo for AK-47s. 9-11 was no different than Pearl Harbor or the Gulf of Tonkin. War is big business and all it costs are a few lives.

Reedsport:Our troops have been dying for over 8 years now. And according to everyone involved in the Afghanistan Theater (outside of paid for talking heads on Major Networks) they say that throwing troops the problem will not help.We are in Afghanistan Illegally and the people will not stop until we LEAVE.

Afghanistan isn't America it is filled with dozens of tribal groups who have had to deal with invading outsiders for decades. Afghanistan is also in the midst of a civil war and we just happen to be smack dab in the middle of it. It would help you to actually get to a know a region that so much of your tax dollars is spent on.

Obama is taking time sending more troops because to do so would anger the liberals. He is delaying his Afghanistan decision until after the Pelosi Healthcare bill gets voted on Saturday, so that he can hopefully persuade the liberals to sign on to the health care bill.

It's all about politics...while our troops are dying.

19 al-Qaeda operatives positioned themselves inside the United States and prepared to attack. But U.S. intelligence analysts picked up evidence of al-Qaeda’s plans by sifting through the “chatter” of electronic intercepts. Mohammed Atta was identified as being tied to Al Qaeda and a Brooklyn cell more than a year before the Sept. 11 attacks, and that should have warranted further investigation by the Clinton Administration. And why hasn't anybody found out what classified documents Sandy Berger, during his infamous trip to the National Archives, stuffed in his socks?

Cheney and W were against the initial increase of 30k troops but now they are for the 100k troop increase..weird.

Throwing countless more innocent lives (Military and Civilian (Remember most people who die in war are Women and Children) at the problem will not help.

Afghanistan is an extremely tribal area with thousand year old rifts (just like Iran, Iraq,Pakistan etc) Previously the Taliban (Like Saddam in Iraq) had kept each group under control, then we moved in and well...

Oh and Afghanistan never attacked the USA it was 17 or so Saudia Arabians.. Tell me again why we're even in Afghanistan?

Patricia, very well said. You certainly stirred up the arm chair quarterbacks that have all the answers. Makes one wonder why they are not running for office. He's only had 9 or 10 months (of golf and vacations) some out there think if we just give him a little more time, they will still be saying that four years from now.

Barack Obama wrote on Nov 4, 2009 1:35 PM:

Wasn't Obama's campaign based on how he was going to end wars? Didn't he win the Nobel PEACE Prize? Can't we just bring the troops home? No. We must continue to grow our overseas empire. We must become the United States of the World. This ISN'T a partisan issue. Either you are for pointless wars or you are against them.....thats it. Bush Sr., Clinton, and W. Bush got us into these messes. Why won't Obama get us out? Where are the protesters now?

thistle wrote on Nov 4, 2009 9:16 AM:

There are no good solutions to the wars in Afganistan and Iraq, only varying degrees of bad ones. Bush didn't come up with a solution to Afganistan in seven years in office, why should Obama be expected to do it nine months? Get real.
As far as your opinion of him is concerned, it doesn't matter what he does anyway; there is literally nothing he can do right in your eyes.

In regards to the dangers our troops face overseas: there is no US draft! These people signed up of their own free will. And guess what? Being in the military is, oh, I don't know, about going to war? Soldiers are supposed to put themselves in danger; that's their job! Get over yourself, Patricia, start looking at life realistically and stop watching Fox news and clear your head!

They were not thinking then, 7 years of 'dithering' by B*shco had put an end to that...

B*sh spent more time away from the WH than any other president in history-period.
Some say it was a good thing.
B*sh spent 487 days at Camp David, 490 days at his pig farm...in fact, it was at the pigfarm where B*sh was informed of an "impending attack" by Osama...lol.
Which he of course ignored.

But you knew that.

Just An Observer wrote on Nov 3, 2009 11:23 PM:

This is an asymmetrical conflict and it needs a different approach. This is not massive armies in the field conventional war. The casualty rate is quite low for our side actually. All we need for a winning condition that is affordable is to make sure Al Qaeda does not set up another base. That only requires some air assets, a few tribes on our side and Special Ops. Propping up a corrupt Kabul government or trying to pacify all of Afghanistan is a bridge too far.

I'd fire McChrystal and tell my next commander what I wanted. Obama has no clue and neither does the military so expect drift and ineptitude.

I wasn't all that thrilled with Bush but Obama is some kind of work. I have been in the military in Vietnam and know how hard it is to win a war without the support of the country and the political yes sayers in Washington. I have both pro and con to the actions in the Middle east but we all need a Commander and chief that is for the military and what good are his generals in the field and cabnit advisers and all the others if he doesn't use them when they give him advice. Just my thoughts and as it stands now I too am scared of what the current President is doing and not doing. Fred Clauson LAKESIDE

Patricia,

If you think that Obama's inaction on Afghanistan over the last 10 months is "cowardly, despicable and frightening" I can only imagine what you think the 7 years of inaction by the previous administration amounts to. Were you as outraged then? Or is this just a recent revelation?

Just saying...
