It's time to solve Leah's murder

Nearly a decade ago, my daughter’s life was cut tragically short when she was murdered at 15 years old in Coquille.

My daughter is Leah Freeman and today, Oct. 29, she would have turned 25. As I endure this painful anniversary I am again reminded of everything that was taken away from Leah and everything that could have been. Since I can’t do anything  about that, I do what I can — fight for her justice.

This is why I am making a public plea to Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier and Coquille Police Chief Mark Dannels to dedicate a cold case team to re-investigate Leah’s murder. Leah’s murder remains unsolved and as far as I am aware local law enforcement has done little in recent years to effectively investigate her case. There has been a lot of turmoil and personnel changes at the Coquille Police Department in recent years, and  partly due to that I don’t think her case has been properly handled.

The only concrete information I have in regards to Leah’s murder investigation is from legal documents released several years ago discussing  initial phases of the investigation; these documents can be found at  http://www.leahfreeman.com/documents.htm. I am not aware of anything else that has gone on in the case since that point in time.

Coquille Police Chief Mark Dannels needs to do more than follow up on tips that periodically come in regarding the case. Paul Frasier needs to assign a dedicated team to go back and look through all of the files again, re-interview everyone involved and re-examine all of the evidence. Until this happens Leah’s murderer is still free. I miss my daughter horribly and  want to see justice done, but I also don’t want her murderer roaming free and posing a threat to our community.

My family is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. If you have information regarding my daughter’s murder, please contact the Coquille Police Department at 396-2114 or Coos  Stop Crime at 267-6666.

I say vote R. Paul Frasier out of office this next election... Is he up for re-election this next year?

Yes, there are some unsolved crimes in Coos County. But, I don't think our rate is any worse than a lot of other places. That being said, I would LOVE to see ALL the missing persons and homicides solved. I can't imagine knowing the truth about something like that and being able to hide it. Nor can I imagine losing a child of any age. But, I do take solace in the fact that those who commit such things are dealt with in the end by God.

To Heidi's Mom -

Thank you. I think the strength comes from the love for Leah. I don't think I am doing anything any other Mother wouldn't do in this kind of situation. It is what it is - She is gone and NOTHING will ever bring her back - but as her Mother it is my job to seek justice. She deserves it and NOONE should get away with murder. Noone. Not only does Leah deserve justice - our community deserves to be safe and rid of the freak that took her life. I PRAY TO GOD NO OTHER LIVES ARE LOST FROM THIS INDIVIDUAL. Remember - he is still out there and free to kill again. PLEASE KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE!

22656: it would be nice if some anonymous person were to provide you a name or two of people who have been spreading the rumors and speculation and through something like yahoo email.
But it not good to get ones hopes up AnD have them DaShed. Are you aware of any chatter that has gone on locally throughout the years, or who claMMed up when there was an investigation? it is hard to believe that nobody knows anything or that they don't have the guts to come forward. i am sorry for your loss and Leah has been on my mind for years.

It takes just one person to tell what they know to help solve this horrible crime. No mother should ever out live their child. I hope and pray that someone will finally develop a conscience and speak up for Leah. It is way past the time for someone to do the right thing. Cory, I admire the strength you have had over the last decade and wonder where you got it and how you kept it. Please, please, anyone, if you know something share the information with the authorities. This case must be solved.

To Amadeus-

Thank you for your comment. First of all, I am sorry to hear about your friend. You reminded me of something I thought about years ago. For nearly a decade now I have sat back and watched so many young children being abducted/murdered on tv. High profile cases such as Natalee Hollaway, Haleigh Cummings, Caylee Anthony, Miranda Gaddis and Ashley Pond, and the list goes on and on. When I watched these tragedies unfold I've noticed that in nearly every case the sheriff from their counties are on there pleading for information. Most all of them also had tears streaming down their faces. In all the years that Leah has been gone now I must ask..... Where was/is OUR Sheriff? Not once do I remember seeing him defending "Our Murdered Teen". Why? That is a question I would really like answered.

to 1313... it is because law enforcement are not trained as detectives. nor are they motivated to solve crimes against poor people. 20 years ago my best friend was murdered, there were eyewitnesses to the suspects and I identified one...the police never followed up on the information I gave them and FINALLY, when Andy Jackson was elected I saw a glimmer of hope so I wrote him a detailed letter and left many phone calls. The letter and the phone calls all remain unanswered, but I am not surprised now, as Andy has gone to the dark side (republican silly, that was NOT a veiled raciel slur). I am sure if my friend had been the Mayor's brother etc there would have been an investigation, arrests and convictions, but alas he was just a working class man...

I can't understand how in an area as small as this one, that so many crimes go unsolved. How can they find guilty people in places like N.Y. and L.A. with so so many people, and in this small area of so few people, the guilty are never caught. What is wrong here????

To Q...

If you go to Leah's website on the contact part, that is how to reach me!

Thank you for your comment. Your last sentence was BEAUTIFUL!! Brought tears to my eyes....but still BEAUTIFUL!!

Thank you for the moment to remember Leah.

I would actually be interested in getting a hold of you by email, Cory. I have a story I'd like to tell you... and see what your thoughts are.

Leah - beautiful on Earth, stellar as an Angel...

this is so sad. Cory, know that you have an angel looking down on you - hang in there. I can't imagine how hard this must be for you.

Thank you JLC for your comment. I would think that after nearly a decade anyone with any knowledge of what happened to Leah would have come forward. It's such a cowardly inhumane thing not to. Sad and scarey to think that the person(s) responsible for her death are still free to roam our streets. I pray no other lives are taken by this monster.

jlc wrote on Oct 31, 2009 11:52 AM:

First of all I am so sorry for your loss. I cant even imagine what you go thru on a daily basis. I pray for you that they find who is responsible. I know the pain never goes away and day to day living must be overwhelming at times, but she has not been forgotten and the monster responsible will be brought to justice. I really believe that in my heart. It has always bothered me that it has not been solved and I pray they never stop looking.I never knew Leah but as a parent I cant even imagine your pain. Leah is in the arms of her dad and not alone. My thoughts are with you during these terrible times and never give up, your justice will come.

My name is actually Cory....Leah's Mom. Thank you for the Birthday wishes for Leah. She is at peace now - with her Dad. He passed away last friday. I'm hoping they had a joyous celebration.

To Just An Observer -
I went to Leah's website and it works just fine. Yes, it would be appropriate to remember Jeremy Bright and Lynn Donaldson and even others whose cases remain unsolved. The reason they aren't mentioned in this article is because this was about Leah's birthday. I pray for Jeremy to be found ALOT. I can't imagine that scenario. Sad. Also, there IS a Remembrance Day for all Murdered Victims....It is September 25th.
Thank you also Just An Observer for the best wishes.....and I do believe she will never be forgotten - However......JUSTICE WILL BE FOUND. Wait and see!

JT wrote on Oct 29, 2009 8:12 PM:

Happy Birthday Leah... Your friends miss you dearly, and we hope the sorry SOB's are "found" and locked up for life!!! They know who they are, and I think we do too!!!!!

Just An Observer wrote on Oct 29, 2009 7:04 PM:

The website is not coming up sorry to say.

Let's also remember the boy who disappeared at the Coos County fair and the killing of Lynn Lee Donaldson that took place at the time the Chinese family that owned Ming's was killed on Telegraph Hill. No doubt others can recall other unsolved murders. We need a Remembrance Day for those unfortunate people and those they left behind to grieve over their loss.

The Leah Freeman case was unique in terms of investigative power brought to bear. The FBI came in and they couldn't crack a thing. As I remember, the news reports talked about how Coquille clammed up. As the years went by we read so many crazy crime/police stories that came out of that town. I wonder if the Leah skeleton will ever come out of the closet?

Best wishes Cory. Leah will never be forgotten even if justice is never found.

Someone out there knows something that could lead to the arrest of who was responsible for this terrible event. I urge you to come forward and give the Freeman's some peace.
