COOS BAY — About a dozen people spent Friday morning standing outside the offices of The World newspaper and KCBY-TV to argue that some news organizations aren’t doing their jobs.

Organizer Joan Calhoun of Langlois contends the country is suffering more from political graft and corruption than ever, yet newspapers aren’t uncovering any of it.

Calhoun and others at the event said they have learned this from information they’ve gleaned from online outlets like the American Thinker and Politico, as well as Fox News. They also listen to conservative pundits on radio and television.

John L. Park, a retired Coos Bay teacher, said there is an advantage to getting his news on television.

“If I don’t like what somebody is saying, I can mute it,” he said.

Another organizer, Adella Robison of Sixes said the protesters aren’t really targeting The World. They are joining protesters around the country who want to point out the failings of major media outlets.

Calhoun argued that many newspapers, including The World, provided insufficient coverage of a protest in Washington, D.C., that took place on Sept. 12.

“It seems like the mainstream media is suppressing the news,” she said.

I read down the page a bit that the skepticism of President Obama crosses party lines. Do you mean like the Palin Republican party, the Gingrich Republican party, the Fox Republican party, the Rush Republican party, the Cheney Republican party, the Tea Bagger Republican party, the Truther Republican party, the Birther Republican party. I know none of them want to be associated with Bush so I’ll leave his Republican party out.
I couldn’t help myself, it was just to easy to pass up.

The World newspaper is lucky this wasn't a left wing protest if so the building would have been set on fire all the employees cars would have been flipped over and lit aflame and every window in a 2 block radius would have been broken with trash a foot deep for blocks around .

Justice for All wrote on Oct 23, 2009 5:36 PM:

Tanner, it's pretty pathetic that instead of responding with your opinion of the 30 Republican Senators who voted pro-rape all you can do is insult me and continue to berate me about signing my name. I haven't noticed you bothering those right-wingers whom you agree with about signing their names.
Well, since you asked so nicely, here is it. Last name: Jablome; first name: Heywood.

Roger Ramjet wrote on Oct 23, 2009 3:29 PM:

I was disppointed to learn that protesters in front the World weren't protesting the Newspaper itself and it's loathsome reporting, grammar, syntax and slanted reportage.

Tanner Hamlett wrote on Oct 23, 2009 2:12 PM:

Oh, I get it, so when you bash Fox News as a liberal, you're free to generalize and denegrate; however, as a constitutional conservative, I can not use either of these devices?

Get over yourself and off your pedestal.

Sign your name, coward.

Tanner Hamlett wrote on Oct 23, 2009 2:09 PM:

Justice 4 All,

By "valid points" do you mean repetitive, ignorant liberal tripe?

Or do you mean the inability to sign your actual name?

Come on bud, have the courage to sign your name to what you speak.

Obama may be the President, but it's still a free country...kinda

Justice for All wrote on Oct 23, 2009 12:14 PM:

Tanner, nice job ignoring all the valid points I made. Perhaps you're changing the subject because the actions of those 30 Republican Senators is indefensible. And the fact that Fox News hasn't touched the story is further evidence that they don't care about "news," just opinions.

I don't remember hearing about any Democratic leaders voting to let Polanski off. In fact, outside of some support from the Hollywood establishment, most liberals think that Polanski deserves to pay for his crimes. But would there be such outrage if Polanski wasn't famous?

This is a typical conservative tactic. If the subject makes you look bad, just change the subject. Have fun sticking your heads in the sand.

Barack Obama wrote on Oct 23, 2009 12:09 PM:

Let me just say something about FOX NEWS for a second. What a great idea by them. They are making soooo much money just, because they saw that all news stations are left leaning so started a news station that is right leaning. Nicely played. I may not watch FOX very much, but it is nice to have a station that leans the opposite way of all the other ones.

You really can't complain about FOX and then sit back and watch Chris Mathews or Keith Olberman on MSNBC. Really? You are going to tell me that Glenn Beck is any worse than Keith Olberman? Seriously? They are both extremists for their parties. Get real FOX critics, get over yourself. If you don't like it you can watch MSNBC, that is the great thing about having 100's of channels.

Tanner Hamlett wrote on Oct 23, 2009 11:07 AM:

Justice 4 All,

I've started to come around. I now look forward to reading your ignorant liberal drivel. It's kinda like shooting fish in a barrel.

Your implications that Fox News supports rape is pretty funny, and dumb.

So, does conservative Fox support rape more or less than the liberal media, which seems to be pretty okay with Roman Polanski's drugging and raping of a 13 year old girl?

Whoa! What's that?!?! A liberal double-standard??? Who would thunk it?!?

Prime Time Cable News Daily Ratings for October 20, 2009

Fox News – 2,511,000 viewers
CNN - 628,000 viewers
MSNBC – 861,000 viewers
CNBC – 127,000 viewers
HLN – 658,000 viewers

2,511,000 for "conservative" Fox
2,274,000 for the "liberal" networks

Seems Americans are pretty fair and balanced about who they watch.

The good news here is that leaves about 302,000,000 other Americans who have better things to do with their time then watch talking heads on TV.

I'm going fishin'.

Why should 60,000 birthers get news coverage? Is this a democracy any more? We let the republicans ruin this country for 30 years. Isn't the right thing to do, to let the winners clean up this mess without All the hysteria? You'd think people are going to lose something they have!

Justice for All wrote on Oct 21, 2009 7:04 PM:

I'm not sure how one can logically equate being critical with the opinion reporting of Fox News, to being against freedom of the press.

It looks to me like conservatives are against freedom of speech when they freak out when anyone criticizes their beloved Fox News.

Apparently, conservatives are also for corporations being able to take away the legal rights of employees. 30 Republican Senators voted to continue giving U.S. tax dollars to contractors that allow and condone the raping of female employees.

Why hasn't Fox News reported on this story? If they are the respected "news" organization that all of you claim them to be, wouldn't they report on this news. Oh yeah, it doesn't fit within their opinion; busting ACORN for tax violations is apparently more important than stopping rape.

Democrats aren't against freedom of the press, instead we are exercising our freedom to speak out about the damage that Fox News is doing to our nation.

I like COQUILLIAN's thoughts on the media. We shouldn't listen to the other side or other people's opinions. We should ignore all bad things said about the president. We should just listen to people who tell us what we want to hear.

Like when those guys from the Washington Post went after Nixon. What a hatchet job that was!

The liberals have a point and this "freedom of the press" thing needs to be stopped. We need government controlled media now!

Four legs good. Two legs better.

Here's an example of the way the media works:

A few years back, when that guy Bush was president, there was a flu vaccine shortage. The press was screaming about how horrible that was and how Bush let it happen and how Bush would let people die.

Well, last week I went to my doctor to get a flu shot and was told there is none available. I'm not talking about the swine flu vaccination but the regular seasonal flu shot. He said there an extreme shortage all over America.

Does the press talk about it or say it's Obama's fault? No, how could it possibly be Obama's fault? The press will report what they want to report to sway public opinion.

And people will die.

You "women's" rights fanatics would be led by a "Queen" right now if you would have shut up. Besides the CBO also says the measure could slim down the nation's deficit over the first 10 years of having a public option.

Fox news is NOT on your side. Fox news is on the side of the rich insurance companies that run ads on their stations. Wake up and face the truth. They belong on the enemies list.

Which media is that, the ones OTHER than Fox. Wake up folks this is where it all begins.

NOJOB wrote on Oct 21, 2009 12:48 PM:

I wish people would stop complaining that the media is not reporting on certain things. Don't you realize they're doing it for your own good? If we knew what was actually going on we would get really upset. We need to trust them. They will tell us what we need to know.

Like if they told us the US debt is $11,960,059,874,953.00 and growing at $3.92 billion per day. That would probably make people want the government to quit spending so much money and then they'd get upset. But if they tell us the president says there's no budget problem we will all be happy.

See? I feel better already!

Megapotamus wrote on Oct 21, 2009 12:47 PM:

The more Americans hear about the details of President Obama's policy proposals, the less they like them.
The difficult part is to actually find a media outlet willing to report the details honestly.
Most news organizations act like unpaid lackeys for this administration and do absolutely nothing to challenge it.
You can like the man, and dislike his policies.
How many fluff pieces before the real news media starts asking tough questions?

Hey, what happened to "You're either with us or you're against us." Maybe they should be tried for treason?

Why do I get the sinking feeling that these same brainwashed over-eaters will be in front of me at the doctors office demanding their "free" health care?

Justice for All wrote on Oct 20, 2009 2:56 PM:

1313, Fox News is not news, it is opinion. It's as simple as that.

That's why Fox News didn't cover the 30 Republican Senators who voted to allow U.S. contractors to continue avoiding liability when their employees are raped by other employees.

It's a factual news story that doesn't fit within the framework of the opinions that they have. If the tea baggers want to watch Fox News because they like the opinions, that's fine, but don't try to convince me that "it all makes sense."

The only way anything on Fox News "makes sense" is to equate the opinions with the fact that the network is already bought and paid for by corporations who oppose President Obama.

fawkina wrote on Oct 20, 2009 2:45 PM:

DannyGS, thanks for the offer. I'm afraid that might attract a lynch mob in Coos County though.

Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are both college drop-outs and former drug abusers. Sean Hannity never even tried to go to college. Perhaps that's why they can identify with so many of their followers.

Do your own listening for a few DAYS and you will see they are not "BAD" like you think and they do know what they are talking about and it all makes sense ! ! !

The likes of Fox Extremist TV, Rush, Sarah and those tea baggers are fragmenting the group once known as the Republican Party. I’m sure the Democrats want them to keep up the good work.

In the past I have enjoyed seeing those old tea baggers with their anti socialism signs, you just know some if not all of them run home and cash their SSI checks on their way to a Medicare doctors visit or trip to a VA facility. Some say that they paid into that SSI so their entitled to it, what!!!!!!! They would actually take an entitlement; I thought entitlements were un American. It seems entitlements are a terrible thing if someone else gets them but not nearly as bad when they benefit from them. Here's another story that The World failed to report on:

30 republican U.S. Senators voted against a bill that included an amendment that would prohibit giving government contracts to companies that require employees to release the company from liability if they are raped by other company employees.

The amendment, authored by Al Franken, surprisingly is actually necessary, because last year a number of women came forward claiming that they were gang raped while working for various Haliburton subsidiaries. However, the alleged rape victims can't take the company to court because their employment contracts prohibit it.

And 30 republican senators voted against the bill. I wonder if Fox News reported on that story. Either way, I'm sure all you tea baggers (hilarious term, by the way) will find a way to justify the pro-rape votes.

No spin? The caption says 11 people and 1 dog... How many LNG protests got covered with 6 or 7 people? I don't recall seeing how many people or dogs showed up to those.

Another bunch of Fox Noise. What I'd like to do is picket the local TV companies to try to get them to quit carrying Fox Noise.

This little demonstration was brought to you by the same Right Wing Think Tank (funded by Health Insurance Industries, Pharmaceuticals,Oil Companies etc) that brought you the Tea Parties.

When will these idiots start thinking for themselves instead of having Glenn Beck and Right Wing Loons on the radio tell them what to do? Turn off your television every news organization has an agenda it's called Profits.

Obviously these beauties don't need any health care, they look to be in tip top shape..

I can also tell they must be experts on "socialism" (or at least what Glenn Beck tells them it is).

It's quite sad when these uninformed, uneducated poor rural folk get tricked into voting against their own self-interests.

The World does not do a bad job regarding what little coverage it devotes to national news. Most of it comes from the AP. Locally is a completely different story. The World definitely slants its opinion and coverage toward its advertising base. We just need to keep in mind that business is business and the World like any other business needs to do what it needs to do in order to survive.

Wow. I think Mr. Park just summed it up. "If I don't like what somebody is saying, I can mute it." For these people it isn't "all the news that's fit to print," it's "all the news I want to hear, the way I want to hear it."
