We must demand health care reform
Saturday, July 4, 2009 8:11 AM PDT

What was the last thing that the American people asked for that was truly for them as individuals? More than 70 percent of Americans know there will be no health care reform without a public option. So now is the time for each of us to get active and literally ask.

We, for the most part, are like obedient children. We stand aside and trust the judgment of Congress about money spent on wars, foreign aid and security. If we are to thrive and be productive, work and pay taxes and serve in the military, we must be a healthy nation.

One thing is for sure, the demand for services will never diminish, so in keeping with current market principles, the amount of the profit that insurance companies and providers seek will always rise. If this has not as yet touched your or a loved one's life, it inevitably will.

U.S. Rep. DeFazio and Sen. Merkley are on board, but Sen. Wyden is not. Contact his office by phone and letter. Thank him for his service, but tell him he has this all wrong. His plan will only strengthen and enrich the insurance industry.

There are additional Democratic senators who have refused to commit to a public option as well. Bill Press has a list of them on his Web page. Call them and write to them; tell them how you want your tax dollars spent. After all, that is what this ultimately is about. Ask!
