BLM to burn grass for elk near Reedsport

Monday, June 29, 2009 |
Fire officials with the Bureau of Land Management are managing controlled pasture burns at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area into early July.
In all, they will have burned 121 acres to improve elk forage and habitat at the popular viewing area, a press release said.
The prescribed burn is part of the BLM’s yearly efforts to improve grazing conditions so the wild herd of 80-100 Roosevelt elk will continue to use the pastures.
According to BLM Fuels Specialist Bill Elam, the viewing area and restrooms may be temporarily closed during portions of the burn to protect visitor safety. Smoke from the burns may cause occasional traffic delays on Highway 38. Motorists are asked to travel cautiously through the Dean Creek area and traffic controllers will help direct traffic during periods of reduced visibility.
“Each year we burn, we see amazing growth of high quality grasses afterwards, and the elk continue to descend on the area,” said Bob Golden, Dean Creek site manager.
