Two North Bend Girl Scouts have hit gold.

Karen Fowler and Andrea Alvarez, both students at North Bend High School and members of Girl Scout Troop 30456, earned the organization's highest honor - the Gold Award.

It meant they had to put in a minimum of 65 hours work, in addition to community outreach and leadership. Troop co-leader Laurel Alvarez said the girls presented their project ideas in May of 2007. They spent hours volunteering with the Friends of Coos County Animals and helped a 4-H archery club.

Karen, newly graduated from North Bend High School, is the daughter of Barbara L. Taylor and Steven Fowler.  She joined her troop in second grade. She spent time with Friends of Coos County Animals, volunteered at pet adoption festivals in the Coos Bay area, talked to the public about the importance of spaying and neutering and handed out brochures she designed.  She also painted murals at the Coos County Animal Shelter.

Karen completed her project and received her award earlier this year.

Andrea, a junior at North Bend, is the daughter of Laurel and Andy Alvarez. She joined Girl Scouts in fourth grade.

For her project, she built a storage cabinet for the Coos County 4-H Straight Shooters archery club. Her love of archery, fostered by her father and her 4-H Instructor Shirley Bower, inspired her.

She spent more than 80 hours working on the cabinet. It will store bows and arrows and other shooting necessities for the club. Bower said the shooting equipment has been stored in boxes downstairs at the Myrtle Point Oregon State University Extension Building.

"I wanted to give her  a special thing to put the equipment in," Andrea said Tuesday.

Bower said the club would never have been able to buy a storage cabinet of the same quality.

"It's something we will have 50 years from now," Bower said.

Karen will attend Oregon State University to major in animal sciences.  She intends to earn a degree in veterinary medicine.

Andrea has been a state award winner in barebow archery competitions multiple times. In addition to helping younger 4-H club members with their shooting, she has volunteered as a archery instructor at 4-H Camp Myrtlewood, the Boy Scouts Day camp and the S.O.C.K. Kiwanis Camp every summer for several years.
