Put the blame on the criminals

I just read the Public Forum response to a couple having their parking permit stolen. While I have so many issues with some who use and abuse those permits when they do not need them, the real issue is the theft.

The respondent seemed to imply that they deserved it because they may have left their car unlocked. Although we don’t know if that is the case or not it is no excuse for someone to steal. I think crime victims are treated like this way too much. If the property is not yours, it is not yours. It should not matter if it was locked up or not. If you are the victim there is no reason to be made to feel guilty for being victimized.

We recently saw this in Coquille, where the man was assaulted over making an improper hand gesture at a couple of others and they assaulted him. He was made to feel that some of his injuries could be his fault. That was absolutely wrong unless he was planning to jump into a ditch anyway while they were out on their walk.

It is a shame that we have to lock all our valuables away and assume the responsibility for it not being stolen instead of placing the responsibility on others for leaving it alone. Do not blame the victims for the crime.

I agree, if you want something I have, get a job and pay for it just like I did. Heck I'll even tell you where I got it. I hate thieves.
