BANDON — What makes a successful entrepreneur? Sheri McGrath says it takes a lot of hard work, understanding client needs and practical inspiration.
That’s the mix McGrath credits for her home design business’ growth. The 29-year-old start Bandon Drafting and Design LLC in 2006. It was a one-person operation. Now her staff has doubled, with the addition of a graphic designer Jami Gallagher.
“Even in this economy, people still need plans for smaller additions or to change the uses of structures such as garages into homes,” she noted.
McGrath provides a full-service business. She provides not just designing, but also the landscaping and interior help.
Since she is not an architect, McGrath often works with Bandon engineer Scott Kent to provide services such as topographic surveys, construction staking, site plans and ensuring the site and new house will be up to code.
McGrath considers each project a collaboration — or co-project — which she does with the client.
“I give them homework to keep them involved,” she said.
Often, clients bring in sketches or simply drawn-out ideas of what they want for a new house. McGrath then transforms them into usable blueprints.
McGrath credits her parents, owners of Eichelberger Construction in Bandon, with introducing her to the pros and cons of entrepreneurship. McGrath received some on-the-job training by doing drawings for her parents’ company. Inspired, McGrath decided to open her own business.
“Since I was 6 years old, I have wanted to have my own business,” she said.
