U of O fund drive shatters goal, raises $850 million

Sunday, February 01, 2009 |
EUGENE (AP) — The University of Oregon has raised more than $850 million in an eight-year fund drive.
What was called Campaign Oregon far exceeded the goal of $600 million set when fundraising started during the 2001 recession, University President Dave Frohnmayer said Friday.
The school has already begun to reshape its campus with money from the drive, which will also provide tens of millions of dollars for new scholarships, faculty positions and program expansions.
Frohnmayer, who retires in June, called the result breathtaking and said it speaks volumes about the university’s reputation.
“It’s a hot brand,” Frohnmayer told the Eugene Register-Guard. “The visibility regionally and even in the world is measurably greater.”
He said 90,000 people gave money.
