Coquille council will select new councilor Monday

A candidate who thought she deserved to win a Coquille City Council seat in November will have another chance on Monday. But so will two other also-rans and two newcomers.
Dian Courtright, a vocal critic of past police department leadership, placed fourth in November’s race for three council seats, behind three incumbents. But one incumbent, Kathy Hagen, had moved outside city limits and was ineligible to serve.
“I think I’ve won,” Courtright said at the time. “Her name should not have been on the ballot.”
Courtright has a second shot at Hagen’s job in Monday’s council meeting. Council members will cast written ballots to fill the vacant seat, though each member’s vote will be announced when the ballots are opened.
November candidates Amanda Davidson and John Spencer, both of whom finished behind Courtright, also have applied for the seat. So have Matt Muenchrath and Nikole Graham, who didn’t run in the November election.
Hagen moved out of the city limits in October, but found out about her ineligibility too late to remove her name from the ballot. Though some people supported simply appointing Courtright, officials said the city charter mandated advertising for applications. The five candidates were interviewed publicly last month.
Since then, the city has received two letters regarding the selection. One, from attorney Al Walsh supported Muenchrath. Another, from Coquille resident Eldon Rollins, said the city should either take the top three finishers besides Hagen (which would make Courtright a winner), or hold a run-off election.
The council selection will lead off the council’s business. After that, the new council and mayor will be sworn in.
Also on the agenda is a review of the city’s 2007-08 financial audit. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 851 N. Central Ave. The public is welcome.
