NORTH BEND — The new year marks a new era for the new McDonald’s restaurant in North Bend.

The recently completed business, which replaces the old building demolished in August, opened on New Year’s Day, a couple of weeks ahead of schedule.

Rod Somerville, who owns the restaurant with his son, Scott, said he had expected to open about mid-January. He attributed the early opening to construction going smoothly and having no trouble getting permits.

“The North Bend Building Department was cooperative to work with,” Somerville said.

And that first day was busy despite the holiday.

“Usually New Year’s Day is a slow day,” Somerville said. “We had a great opening the first day.”

Upgrades to the restaurant include having two cashiers working the double drive-through who can take orders at the same time. There is a camera that takes photos of cars so cashiers can match orders to the vehicles. It also offers a full coffee-espresso line.

The restaurant employs 50, plus management — 15 more people than the old restaurant employed. Sixty to 75 percent of the employees are re-hires from the old McDonald’s, he said. Many of them had been placed at either the Wal-Mart in Coos Bay or downtown Coos Bay restaurants while the new McDonald’s was under construction, according to Somerville.

“Everybody’s happy,” Somerville said.

The original McDonald’s building was constructed on the corner of Broadway Street and Newmark Avenue in 1974. The Somervilles own five South Coast McDonald’s locations.

McDonald’s in North Bend is open 6 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

McDonald's hires felons, well that is certainly comforting. It's nice to know that a convicted rapist or murder is making my big mack and fries.

Kristi wrote on Jan 10, 2009 12:30 PM:

Holy heck, some ungratefulness if I do say so myself. No one is saying you high paying professionals go to McDonald's and apply! They are offering jobs to those unemployed that might be grateful enough to get a job paying minimum wage or WHATEVER, which is more than what many people are making right now. Something is better than nothing and shows one has heart if you ask me, if they are willing to take a "JOB". It is a reference! I also believe McDonald's hires felons, which is promising for some who can't get a job anywhere else. At least they use to! For all you who look down on those who are looking to help or uplift others, I say I feel for those who hire you... Good thing your names didn't get printed, I wouldn't want to work with that attitude in my line of business! :o)

I don't understand why you people are making such a fuss. You go to work for McDonalds you make minimum wage. A multi-million dollar corpoation gets cheep labor, You can live in your car and bring the leftover french fries home to feed your kids It's a win win situation.

HURRAY FOR PENNIES wrote on Jan 8, 2009 3:16 PM:

wow more minimum wage jobs. that's such an amazing thing!

Obama inspires a higher place for us wrote on Jan 8, 2009 9:27 AM:

It was a hopeful speech, this morning. Heart warming to see a man with intelligence and compassion for the people and country.

It reminded me of something reagan said, The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Realistically, he should have said, I'm a republican and I'm here to help. MG! Could a party be more destructive to a country while professing that they are the only ones with answers?

And why does the republican congress act like we didn't vote them into the minority? Listening to boner and mcconell, you'd think they're still in charge!

to all you complainers. with all your brilliance, why don't you open up your own business, with your own money, surely you wouldn't have time to complain about how others employ or conduct their business, you'd be too busy covering your a-- at your self created job, get r done

Steve wrote on Jan 7, 2009 4:07 PM:

I hate this story, it reminds me that I am hungry and stuck at work. Why couldn't they talk about a chinese restaurant since I don't like chinese food.

Totsoc wrote on Jan 7, 2009 3:25 PM:

If I had to support my family out of financial desperation, I would work at McDonalds. I worked at Burger King and 7-11 while holding down a military job.
Obviously fast food joints are not a career move unless you are in Management. P.S. I have a learning disability, and staying off your butt is one way to stay out of poverty.

breakfast wrote on Jan 7, 2009 1:53 PM:

Tried out the new digs this morning at about 8:45. I was the only car in the drive through and parking lot had 3-4 cars present. Service was fast, maybe 3-4 minutes total time. But! I ordered sausage w/egg mcmuffin meal and and extra said sandwich on the side. I got to work and found I had been given instead, 1 sausage mcmuffin & 2 hashbrowns. Bummer!

And wrote on Jan 6, 2009 3:28 PM:

So he hasn't made any policy yet, he just made promises and statements of what he would do, and you obviously voted for him based on that. So I am making a bit of a stretch in employment opportunities at McDees but the reality is there will be a better chance of working at McDees that Obama "building jobs"

Off The Mark wrote on Jan 6, 2009 3:22 PM:

Mark, back away from the computer and take a break (and your meds). Your comments reflect an overwrought mind in serious need of a reality check... laying blame when the President-elect is not implemented a single policy yet because he is not yet seated in the office. Better yet, go have a burger and some fries at the new McD, maybe lack of food is making you delusional. Ironically, that may be prerequisite for the "neo-con" mindset.

Kiss wrote on Jan 6, 2009 8:54 AM:

Nutrition good bye.

Hey Mark wrote on Jan 6, 2009 8:52 AM:

I can't believe rush has you saying such a thing! OMG! Do you realize how absolutely foolish that sounds? Ditto heads have to be thee most uninformed, uneducated followers of a destructive cult. I am just amazed at how lazy people refuse to educate themselves of the issues. We will be living in the shadow of bush's reaganomics on steroids for years to come. Nothing you regurgitate will change truth.

No Complaint wrote on Jan 6, 2009 12:37 AM:

One has to laugh at the vast amount of whining in these email comments, and in particular, the intelligence folks like "Mark", already blaming Prez-elect Obama who is still weeks away from his inauguration. It's a story about a fast food place, fer krissakes. McD smkes a decent burger and a cup of coffee, and has clean restrooms, in my opinion. Been dropping in to McD's for over 40 years and am still within 20 pounds of where I was as a teen. Its up to each of us regarding what and how much to put into our mouths, after all.

Resident wrote on Jan 5, 2009 9:58 PM:

To Steve Pickering--You must be kidding. Do you expect those who lost their jobs at the college (and many others like them) to line up at McDonalds for work? I definitely would rather leave the area than start over at McDonalds.

Rocco St.Bruno wrote on Jan 5, 2009 6:55 PM:

Fast Food is the main industry around the bay area. Better be nice to Mickey D.

Dead man walking.. wrote on Jan 5, 2009 12:35 PM:

Yeah.. But you are more likely to die of obesity or a heart attack with Mac Joke's food than an LNG accident. So which is more really more dangerous to you and your kids? LOL..

Jobs Needed wrote on Jan 5, 2009 10:58 AM:

People will Cry and complain over anything. those are probibly the ones that are trying to keep ANY new business from opening and oh my gosh NEW jobs. Yeall better get off your FAT behinds and do something or there wont be anything left but "THE CASINO" and we all know that isn't making anybody any money oh except the "indians"
Come on people can't we be greatful that someone is trying to keep "JOBS" there instead of shipping the jobs to "PORTLAND".

Steve Pickering wrote on Jan 5, 2009 10:30 AM:

Congratulations Rod Sumerville. Nice looking operation, and even 15 new jobs is 15 more jobs than there were. I wish you success.

Why do I get the feeling there are people here who would rather sit on the couch and watch TV than take a minimum wage job? Myself I am retired so it doesn't matter either way to me, but to belittle those who take any work they can get and smile about it is a travesty to the community.

wow wrote on Jan 5, 2009 10:06 AM:

last time i checked a job is a job! min wage is now 8.40 cents, seems a lot of people making more than min wage last year now make min wage again but at least they have a job! its not easy getting a job anymore so some do what they can and take any job they can get and here you people are cutting them down. well, i guess they can quit their min wage mcdonalds jobs and go on walfare so you people can pay for them to live!! now a job is a job right? get a grip on reality people if your too fat to eat at mcdonalds its your fault not the people working there, trying to survive!!

NB Rez wrote on Jan 5, 2009 8:07 AM:

Driving by, I couldn't believe how many people showed up at the opening. What's next...a Micky D's festival and parade in this town?

Mark wrote on Jan 5, 2009 8:05 AM:

So this was Obamas plan, 2.5 million new jobs at minimum wage working for fast food selling products that can ultimately kill us! NICE!

Coos Bay Resident wrote on Jan 4, 2009 4:18 PM:

Well it is ALOT safer than LNG!!

Congrats.....but... wrote on Jan 4, 2009 1:01 PM:

I love how Jo Rafferty writes a very slighted article against ORC and the mine, which will have living wage operator and supervisor jobs, yet talks up the wonderful new McDonalds jobs. Its great that it was renovated...and hired more folks. Great...but why can't this paper write one good thing about the REAL jobs that are dwindling or being FOUGHT in this area????

Starbuck wrote on Jan 4, 2009 12:15 PM:

No mickey D for me...that regurgitated cardboard will kill ya, never mind the welfare wages.

I still miss Woody's Quik Wok :(

No more Mickey Ds wrote on Jan 4, 2009 10:19 AM:

I've lost 20 lbs since the NB Mc Donald's closed for construction! Won't be going back!

This area needs jobs that pay a decent wage, not some part-time teenie bopper job at the bottom of the pay scale.

Besides . . . isn't Coos Bay fat enough?

rick wrote on Jan 4, 2009 9:52 AM:

Get rid of the double drive thru. This is not Portland we only need one drive thru here . I drove thru it and it caused a lot of confusion among the workers.mixed orders and a long wait. It's a matter of time before a accident or fight happens in this double drive thru?

Go McDonald's Crew!!! You ROCK!!!

Youre kidding me wrote on Jan 3, 2009 11:50 AM:

Jobs? Yes, at minimum wage. If you want me to jump for joy, tell me about jobs coming to this area that pay a living wage!

With SOCC recently laying off 13 people (and more to come with a 3-5% reduction of funds from the state) and the County laying off 20+ employees, it is hard to get excited over a minimum-wage job meant for teenagers when you know adults who used to make a living wage will be competing for these positions.

Jobs.. wrote on Jan 3, 2009 9:59 AM:

Yeah! Who needs big business in the area? Here are some family wage jobs for those always complaining about unemployment.. No No No to LNG!! Let's get a Sonic's or Jack in the Box.. That will fix our problems.. WooHooo...

multinational predator wrote on Jan 3, 2009 9:50 AM:

mcjobs.

you can make enough money to support a family and eventually buy a home with a mcjob. i wouldn't lie to you. it's part of the george w. bush ownership society!
