Marshfield outlasts Thurston

The Marshfield volleyball team started out the Midwestern League season with a four-game win at Thurston on Tuesday night in a rematch of last year’s league co-champions.
The Pirates won 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 and 25-20 despite missing key players because of injuries — Marshfield only dressed eight varsity players come gametime.
“We were really evenly-matched. It was back and forth all night,” said Pirates coach Tammie Montiel. “We’ve been down with injury all season and dealing with some issues as well... I thought it was a great team effort. Nobody really dominated for us. It was just good volleyball.”
Kara Young had 14 kills and 11 digs for the Pirates, while sister Brittney added 14 digs. Kaitlyn Richmond tallied 20 assists, and Gabby Giorgis racked up four aces.
The Pirates fell behind in the second game and couldn’t come back, but were able to dig deep and win the final two games to take the match.
“We’ll definitely take a victory in four games,” said Montiel.
Far West League
Bulldogs win at Sutherlin
North Bend’s volleyball team faced a tough challenge on the road at Sutherlin on Tuesday night, but rallied after losing the first game to win in four games, 20-25, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-22.
“It was a tremendous match. They were a lot better than I’d seen them. We really had to come out and fight,” said North Bend coach Les Willett. “I was very relieved. My kids stepped it up.”
Alexandra Mateski logged 19 kills and 26 digs for the Bulldogs, while Haley Dunham added nine kills and 27 digs. Katie Banta had 34 assists and 12 digs, while libero Ashley Horlacher racked up 19 digs. Jody Smartt six blocks for North Bend, including the game-winner.
For Sutherlin, Amanda Hutchings had 12 kills, 17 blocks and 16 digs, Tessa Knight added four kills, one block, four assists and 23 digs and Danielle Hultz tallied 33 assists and 11 digs.
“It was a pretty hard-fought match,” said Sutherlin coach Stacie Lefevre.
Siuslaw tops South Umpqua
Visiting Siuslaw topped South Umpqua in three games Tuesday night, winning 25-17, 25-16 and 25-19.
Jenny Stevenson had six blocks, six kills and two aces for the Lancers in the losing effort, while Shelbey McClellan added 14 kills and Kay Robertson had nine kills.
Trojans beat Bruins
Douglas handed visiting Brookings-Harbor a loss in straight sets Tuesday, as the Trojans won 25-20, 25-23 and 25-16.
“All in all it was a good win,” said Douglas coach Carl Bone.
Taylor Keys had seven kills and two blocks for Brookings-Harbor, Shawna Cooper had four kills and Dani Olsen added three kills and six blocks.
For Douglas, Courtney Bush tallied 14 kills and four blocks, Taylor Bond had four kills, Kim Mitz added three aces and nine digs, Kenzie Dahl racked up nine digs and Alaina Findlay added 22 assists.
Sunset Conference
Challengers defeat Braves
Cascade Christian beat host Reedsport in straight sets Tuesday night, running away with the match 25-13, 25-8 and 25-7.
“They’re a level above us,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh. “They’re a level above everybody in our league.”
Shelby Wiggans had three kills and nine 9 digs for the Braves in the loss, and Eden Huebner added three kills and one ace.
Coquille beats Bandon
Coquille came back after dropping the first game to Bandon, winning three straight to defeat the Tigers on the road 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 26-16.
“I don’t know if we let our guard down or what happened,” said Bandon coach Shani Pierce. “Coquille is pretty scrappy, they picked up everything we put over the net.”
Chelsy Forbes had 38 assists and 18 digs for the Red Devils in the win, Lyndsey Cooper added 26 digs, while Allison Cook had 10 kills and three aces. Nikki Hall also had 17 kills for Coquille.
For Bandon, Briana Valentine tallied 13 kills and six digs, Grace Garrett had 11 digs, three kills and two blocks while Karli Crook added eight kills, two digs and two aces in the match.
“It was a good volleyball game,” said Pierce.
Panthers win at Rogue River
Gold Beach defeated Rogue River on the road on Tuesday.
The Panthers won in four games, 25-27, 25-17, 25-15, 28-26.
The victory moved Gold Beach to 4-1 in conference play, while Rogue River dropped to 1-4.
Glide beats MP in close match
Glide handed Myrtle Point yet another close loss Tuesday night, defeating the Bobcats in five games 14-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-15 and 16-14.
“Heartbreakers,” said Myrtle Point coach Kami Hixson. “I’m getting tired of them.”
Meghan Ross had eight kills, for the Bobcats, while Erin Fullerton added eight kills and eight blocks, Sam Sanders had 26 digs and Kaitlyn McCollum pitched in five kills and eight blocks.

Pacific outlasts New Hope
Pacific won a hard-fought match against New Hope on the road Tuesday, winning in four games 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, and 25-20.
Pacific Coach Tiffany Freitag said the win was important for the team after a rough showing at a tournament over the weekend.
“Today was definitely good for us to build that confidence back up,” she said.
Jordan White had six aces and three digs for the Pirates and Devon Ashdown had a solid all-around match with four aces, one kill, four digs and four assists, while Jesse Culley added five aces, seven kills, two digs and two blocks. Ashley Curry also had two aces, three digs and two blocks while Cassie Keeler added three aces, two kills and four digs.
Powers beats UVC in straight sets
Powers defeated Umpqua Valley Christian in straight sets Tuesday night, winning 25-14, 25-17, 25-20 at home.
“We played pretty well compared to how we played last week,” said Cruisers coach Beth Rector. “We had pretty solid net play overall, and we stayed aggressive with our serving.”
Nicole Bittner had six kills, eight digs and one block, while Liz Linderman added six kills and four blocks and Hailey Patterson chipped in 19 assists and three aces for Powers.

Jany’s goals push Bulldogs past Bruins
Sean Jany scored four goals for North Bend as the Bulldogs rolled to a 4-2 victory over visiting Brookings-Harbor.
“It might be a first against a top team like Brookings,” said North Bend coach Blaine Demming. “They were very good, well skilled, and aggressive. It was everything a fan and player could ask for.”
Sam Lynass had two assists for the Bulldogs, and Andy Bush had one.
Dylan Roberts and Linden Loren scored for the Bruins.
Coquille defeats Sutherlin
Coquille soccer star Ryan Dannels had four goals as the Red Devils defeated Sutherlin 4-1 on the road.
Dannels scored the hat-trick-plus-one despite being marked the entire game.
“They marked him up and beat him up a little,” said Coquille coach Randy Lucas.
Regardless, Dannels struck early and often, first putting the Red Devils on the board in the 26th minute on a penalty kick. He struck again in the 52nd, 56th and 70th minutes.
German Ferrera and Tito Rangel both had assists in the game.
Sutherlin’s goal came in the 29th minute.
Coquille was also helped greatly by the return of star keeper Jeff Vesey, who had what Lucas called “the highlight of the game” when he made a diving save on a Sutherlin penalty kick near the end of the match. All in all, Lucas was happy with the effort.
“It was a very physical game. It was something we had to fight through,” he said. “We’re very happy. The defense in particular stepped up tonight.”
Class 3A-2A-1A District 3
Gold Beach falls at Rogue River
Rogue River defeated Gold Beach 3-2 in Class 3A Special District 3 soccer play Tuesday.
The victory was the first of the conference season for Rogue River, moving the team to 1-4 on the year. Gold Beach dropped to 0-5.

Coquille falls to visiting Sutherlin
The Coquille girls soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat to visiting Sutherlin, but the real loss came in a pair of crucial injuries for the Red Devils.
Both Christie Andy and Mia Toskala went down with knee and ankle injuries, respectively, in the loss.
“It was a costly game for us,” said Coquille coach Mark Usselman.
Sutherlin opened scoring with goals in the 27th and 53rd minutes from Stephanie Vandehey and Chelsea Spencer.
Coquille’s lone goal came on a shot in the box from Bailey Richardson on an assist from Mareike Langenbach in the 69th minute.
Sutherlin topped off the win with a 79th-minute goal from Rozalyne Patrick.
“It kind of unraveled on us,” said Usselman of the game after the two injuries. “We had to make some real serious adjustments. We only had two girls on the bench.”
Brookings-Harbor blanks North Bend
Brookings-Harbor’s girls soccer team moved to 4-0 on the season Tuesday with a 1-0 win over visiting North Bend.
The winning goal came in the 59th minute from Ashley Juarez as she cleaned up a rebound and put it in the net.
Brookings-Harbor outshot North Bend 10-3 in the game, and the Bruins mainly were able to keep possession of the ball in the Bulldogs’ half of the field.
The loss dropped North Bend to 2-3 on the season.
“They’re a good team,” said North Bend coach Dustin Hood of the Brookings-Harbor squad. “They’re No. 1 for a reason.”
Midwestern League
Lancers shut out Pirates
Churchill handed host Marshfield a 4-0 loss at home Tuesday in Midwestern League action.
The loss dropped the Pirates to 0-2 in league play, while the Lancers moved to 2-1.
CROSS COUNTRY
Pacific Invitational
Bandon’s boys cross country team took top honors at the 5,000-kilometer Pacific Invitational Tuesday at Cape Blanco State Park, while North Bend won the girls side.
The Tiger boys were dominant with a score of 39 points, as four runners placed in the top 10. North Bend took second on the boys side with a score of 55, while Brookings-Harbor placed third with 65 points.
Tiger runner Brandon Lemerande won with a time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds. North Bend’s Dan Flora took second in 17:57, while Gerald Davis of Bandon was was third in 18:19.
On the girls side, North Bend’s 47 points was well ahead of second-place Bandon’s 68. Brookings-Harbor took third with 101 points.
Myrtle Point’s Maegan Miranda took top honors on the girls side, racing to the finish in 19:40. Katie Romanko of North Bend wasn’t far behind at 19:45, while Wren Carter of Pacific rounded out the top three in 21:45.
This year was the first time the race had ever been run at Cape Blanco State Park.
