North Bend High School will induct the ninth class for its hall of fame Friday night, as part of the school’s homecoming celebration.
Four graduates and a former teacher will be inducted in the ceremony, which begins with a social time at 5 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. The formal presentation starts at 5:30 p.m. and is free for the public.
Following the ceremony, the Bulldogs will play Phoenix High School in the homecoming game, which starts at 7 p.m. Admission for the game is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
This year’s class includes Kenn Hess, Elizabeth “Bette” Larsen, Dick Doyle, Brady Scott and Glen Gardiner.
Hess, who graduated in 1948, had a distinguished career as a sports writer, starting with the high school’s student newspaper and yearbook and continuing with both The World and The Oregonian.
Larsen was a teacher at North Bend from 1954 to 1977 and is credited with starting the school’s modern dance and synchronized swimming programs. She also was the art department chairwoman and a role model for many students.
Doyle, who graduated in 1961, was a three-sport athlete and honor student. He was an all-league player in football and selected for the East-West Shrine Game, and went on to play football for the University of Montana-Western and have a successful career as a high school coach at Siuslaw, Sheldon and Thurston high schools.
Scott, a 1982 graduate, was a three-sport athlete and state champion in wrestling for the Bulldogs and is now the CEO of the Coquille Indian Tribe.
Gardiner, who graduated in 1989, holds North Bend’s school records in both the 800 and 1,500 meters and also was a cross country standout for the Bulldogs. He went on to have a successful career at Marquette University and has coached three state champion track teams at Milwaukee Vincent High School in Wisconsin, where he has been a teacher for more than a decade.
Following the induction ceremony, the surviving new hall of fame members — Hess and Larsen are deceased — will take part in a spirit parade before the football game and also be recognized at halftime.
Also during halftime, North Bend’s homecoming court will be honored and the king and queen announced.
The court includes freshmen Caitlin Snuggerud and Gage Green, sophomores Yuri Hernandez and Ryan Domschot, juniors Rebecca Kaufmann and Dion MacDonald, and seniors Hannah Kintner, Kelly Coolen, Amanda Keith, Karley Swanson, Andy Langenstein, Troy MacVicar, Justin Tobey and Skyler Walton.
