BANDON — Sometimes even barnyard animals need a little surf and turf.

That appeared to be the case Monday morning in Bandon. Four cows and two goats took a trip to the beach after their pasture fence was either cut or broken on the west side of U.S. Highway 101.

“We noticed them on the beach and watched them for awhile,” said Larry Kieling, who is staying at the Windermere Motel with Melodi Wilson from Seattle.

Witnesses said they saw the menagerie near The Inn at Face Rock about 9 a.m. Kieling and Wilson went to the beach, where he was able to pet the cows. Wilson snapped photos.

But the animals’ play day soon came to end. They met up with a group of riders from Bandon Beach Riding Stables.

“We had a ride out and the cows ran up to the horses and scared them,” said stables owner Karen Johnston.

Johnston and others ran the animals onto the former Face Rock golf course. They put one goat and one holstein in a trailer, then tied one cow by a rope to the back, slowly pulling the reluctant animal. The others followed on Beach Loop Drive.

Oregon State Police investigated the incident, which led them to the home of Juan Aritzia. Aritzia said he left his house about 11 a.m. and he thought he saw all his animals in pasture.

“We got home about 7 p.m. and we heard they were loose,” Aritzia said.

The cows and goats spent the night at the stables to give Aritzia time to fix his fence for his pets. “I’ve raised them since they were two days old,” he said.

Johnston said she gets calls periodically from to help with errant animals.

“One time they called me when there were llamas near Bullards Bridge.”

Personally, I LIKE the lead story being something I can get a laugh out of. Nobody hurt, nothing injured, no anger or hate. I like it. :)
