Second patient flees state hospital, but not for long

SALEM (AP) — For the second time in a week, a patient has fled the Oregon State Hospital — this time, though, for only eight minutes.
Patient Mitchell Grigsby said he was recaptured Wednesday because he hurt his leg hopping a fence, and pursuers heard him inside a tool shed yelling, “Ow, my leg! Ow, my leg!”
The 43-year-old Grigsby told the Statesman Journal newspaper he resented a transfer to a different unit, even though it was one considered a step toward release. He bolted from a group of five prisoners and ran off the hospital grounds.
A week ago, patient Michael Sands, of Brookings, escaped and was gone several hours. Police say he carjacked a vehicle, rammed a police cruiser and fought with officers, who eventually used a stun gun on him. |
