Empire comments were inaccurate

My wife and I just took a tour of the Empire District of Coos Bay. A direct response to Mr. Bruce Rothchild’s letter (The World, July 10).

Something in the letter did not ring valid. It was stated that “There are three other bars within three blocks serving the same beer and mixed drinks.” This is vastly misspoken. The nearest establishments are more than four blocks away and one is a supermarket. To get a count of three you must travel to reach the Silver Dollar and Sunset establishments near, or on, Cape Arago Highway. There are no establishments in the area, nor eastward on Newmark, nor any side streets.

It is disinformation that undermines the believability of the opponents to establishing good business citizenships within our community. It appears to feed on the “Blues Laws” mentality that attempts to regulate the moral values of others.

It is appalling that The World chose to print such a letter prior to doing a “little finger walking” to check the validity of Mr. Rothchild’s purported facts.

It sounds to me that what you're saying is Gussie's is a replacement for the Mental Hospitals that the State has shut down. Furthermore, I frankly resent anyone moving into any neighborhood and, rather than enhancing it, bringing with them problems and
problem people.

Hmmmm, you must think your opinion is the only one that can occupy the slow space at the World. I think you need to check on the real problem. The system is broken. The State of Oregon has shut down most of their Mental Hospitals that housed all the population that cannot display "acceptable behavior". They have left their budgets cuts on the City and County Governments to police. Look at the number of Police calls larger populationed areas get from people who cannot behave. As you continue to point fingers at Gussies, did you know that Walmart had far more Police calls during the same time period? Do you want to shut them down also?

If the point of your letter was about the taxpayers money being spent on calls to Gussies, let me point out to you the flaws with the system. The State of Oregon no longer houses people who are a danger to the community & themselves. The State has chosen to balance their budget at the expense of public safety. I would suggest you focus on these issues. I am not sure why you have developed a hatred for Gussies. Did you know Walmart has a lot more Police reports than Gussies during the same period? Do you want to shut them down? Do you read the police reports? Any public place that has many patrons will have police calls. Use your energy to promote change, not to shutdown small businesses. I also offer to you the public records. They are available to anyone. Take the time to read them & come to Gussies so you have facts, not fiction.

What a dumb letter to print.  He must have drove right past O'Bradis or maybe its that new facade to look "old" that made him miss it.

Rick James wrote on Jul 17, 2008 2:22 PM:

Okay so not exactly 3 blocks but I would consider easily within 1 mile being in the vicinity. This hardly qualifies for "vastly misspoken". Your statement that there are no other establishments in the area are just ridiculous.

Billy, it must be a slow day at the World paper or they needed to fill space with that letter. You changed the point of my letter that the taxpayers have better uses for their money than to spend it on police calls to your favorite hangout Gussies. You changed the message to Blue Laws? Empire was my home for 40 years. I thought that I remembered the neighborhood. You are correct, the Sunset Pub, O'Bradi's, the Silver Dollar and the Empire Cafe, selling beer, wine, etc, are withing five short blocks of Gussies, not three. Until recently the Autumn House was also there within the smae five blocks.
