SALEM — A Salem police officer is recovering from minor injuries sustained in a crash.

Police say a Jeep turned left into Officer Vance Cooney’s patrol car, causing it to spin, sever a fire hydrant and hit a tree. Cooney had been trying to pass the Jeep in an effort to catch a fleeing pickup Tuesday.

Cooney was treated and released from Salem Hospital. The driver of the Jeep was not injuried.

The driver of the pickup got away.
