PORTLAND (AP) — Could marijuana ever be sold in retail stores in Oregon?

If supporters of cannabis legalization have their way, that could be a reality as soon as November of 2010.

This week, marijuana legalization activists kicked off a campaign to collect more than 80,000 signatures, enough to put that plan onto the statewide ballot in 2010.

The group says millions of dollars would flow annually into Oregon’s general fund through the sale of marijuana to adults over 21 years old.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission would manage the program, which would license approved individuals to cultivate the product for sale.

A portion of the taxes collected would go to drug treatment.

Oregon already has a medical marijuana program.

'marijuana' is illegal because if it weren't so, the DEA would never be able to suck billions out of the federal budget every year to spend on high-tech weapons, assault gear, and research into new, even more deadly weapons. (Tasers, anyone?)

Tom, you're racist. I say that with a heavy heart because each and every one of these laws written to outlaw drugs was done out of racism. Your wish that we should 'all move to an island' is misplaced. It is YOU who are in the minority. You and your non-cannabis smoking friends should all move to an island. Your opinion is grossly misinformed. tinyurl.com/1mn

If 'marijuana' (a.k.a. its common name, hemp, or it's binomial nomenclature 'cannabis sativa/indica') was a mainstay crop that was farmed in this country for hundreds of years until it was called 'marijuana' (to produce 'fear of the unknown') in congress so they would outlaw it. Had they known they were outlawing the nations #1 crop, they never would have been duped into outlawing it.

Taxing and regulating marijuana, the most popular illicit drug, is a cost-effective alternative to a never-ending drug war.

As long as marijuana distribution remains in the hands of organized crime, consumers will continue to come into contact with sellers of hard drugs. This gateway is the direct result of a fundamentally flawed policy.

Given that marijuana is arguably safer than legal alcohol – the plant has never been shown to cause an overdose death – it makes no sense to waste tax dollars on failed policies that finance organized crime and facilitate the use of hard drugs.

The United States has more people in prison than any country in the world. Out of the millions in prison, over half are inprisoned for a non-violent offence like marijuana.

How can we sit back and spend millions in taxes to overcrowd the private prison industry with our loved ones? How long are we going to listen to the lies of greedy men untill we stand up and let them know who runs this country?

People, it doesn't matter about your looks, your ethnicity, or what you believe in. This is effecting the families of people just like you, all over this planet. Wake up America!

I ask that each one of you would educate yourself with information so we can speak out for the weak and oppressed. Let's let them know that we will not be taken captive for a flower. Let's seek the truth and use this plant as our forefathers did.
