New Wimer Covered Bridge dedicated

WIMER (AP) — Exactly five years after it collapsed into a creek, injuring three people, a new and hopefully improved Wimer Covered Bridge was dedicated in this small, southern Oregon community.
Originally built in 1892, the span was replaced in 1927. That one collapsed July 6, 2003. Investigators determined the bridge failed because of rotting timbers and from vehicles crossing the span that exceeded the six-ton limit.
The new $1.6 million bridge has the look of the original, but with some modern improvements. It is designed to support 10-ton loads, with occasional use by emergency vehicles in excess of that amount.
“This bridge will be here 150 years from now,” said Bob Gail, 89, of Rogue River, who attended Sunday’s dedication.
Also there was Freda Bradford, who said she attended the 1927 dedication when she was 7 years old: “I wouldn’t have missed this for anything.”
