Q: I want to know if it is legal to use the parking lane as a right-turn lane if you are eastbound on Anderson Avenue turning south or northbound on Fourth Street turning east in Coos Bay?

A: No.

“You cannot use the curb parking lane in those areas for anything other than what it is intended for ... parking,” wrote Coos Bay police Capt. Gary McCullough in an e-mail.

The reason those lanes are stripped is because in most situations, drivers are encouraged to stay as close as possible to the curb before making a turn.

At the Coos Bay intersection, parking takes precedent.
