A 29-foot recreational boat hit some pilings near the Sitka Docks near Barview on Thursday and sank in Coos Bay.
Coos County Sheriff’s deputies received a report at approximately 11:37 p.m. that the vessel, a Sea Swirl striper was in trouble, according to the sheriff’s police log.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty officer Bradd Beckett of Coast Guard Station Coos Bay said the boat, which had seven people on board, including one infant, hit the pilings and began to sink.
A Sheriff’s Office marine unit and a small rescue boat from the Coast Guard went out to rescue them. None of the passengers was injured, Beckett said. A small Coast Guard rescue boat crew helped people off the craft, starting with the infant and its mother, who were taken to Bay Area Hospital. Emergency personnel checked the other five people.
Beckett added that the sheriff’s deputies determined alcohol was not a factor. He would not reveal the name of the skipper.
Coast Guard personnel returned to the vessel and tied it to the pilings to prevent it from becoming a navigational hazard, Beckett said.
On Friday, Capt. Thomas Kramer of Vessel Assist, a private boat salvager out of Empire, worked to remove the craft from where it was wedged between pilings.
“The boat is totaled out,” Kramer said.
Vessel Assist removed several pilings, and planned to drag the boat closer to shore where the salvage company would be able to refloat the wreckage.
