A competitive quilter in North Bay will once again put her patchworking skills to the test, when her handiwork is featured at the eighth-biennial Pacific Northwest Quiltfest.
Finalist Mary C. Schroeder, 49, who has competed in a number of well-known quilting contests around the nation, entered two pieces for the Seattle event, to be held Aug. 8 -10 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center.
Judges chose her two quilts — “Blanket with Turtles & Birds,” and “Nice Brown Border” — to go up against nearly 300 in 11 categories. More than $40,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to winners, an Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters press release said. Of the 587 entries juried, 291 were selected.
The contestant described her quilts as more traditional than past pieces. However, Turtles & Birds is a small wall hanging and is considered innovative in piecing, she said.
A quilter since 2000, Schroeder said the Quiltfest is a highly regarded regional competition, which she last entered in 2006.
“While waiting in line to buy tickets in 2006, a quilting tour bus dropped off a whole bunch of ladies who had name tags with their hometowns listed on them. Quite a few of the ladies were from Australia. So PNQF is considered a show good enough to travel to,” Schroeder explained in an e-mail.
Earlier this year she also competed in the 24th-annual American Quilter’s Society Show & Contest, which is considered the most prestigious quilting event in the United States. Although she did not win any categories there, participating was award enough.
“Getting juried in was an accomplishment. I know of just myself and one other lady from the area who have made it into AQS Paducah show,” Schroeder said.
When not practicing the tactile art, Schroeder teaches at the Pacific School of Dance and choreographs shows for the Little Theatre on The Bay in North Bend. She said she is working on some dances for “The King and I,” which will be performed at the theater next year.
The Pacific Northwest Quiltfest is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 9, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 10. For more information, those interested can call (425) 558-1983 or visit
