Airport actions on new terminal, flights south draw criticism

The turmoil swirling in the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport’s new terminal offices wasn’t apparent on the outside of the building Monday.

Landscapers were unloading potted plants to place in the soil near the airport’s entrance off Airport Lane. It also wasn’t obvious — at first — downstairs where Hauser residents, Doug Hill and Terra Enstrom, were setting up their new business, The Hangar Café.

But the news that Horizon Air will stop all flights between North Bend and Portland as of Oct. 11 still was settling in.

Enstrom said she feels like she can’t make plans for the future yet.

“Everything’s based on what’s going to happen with the airlines,” she said.

Hill said he is keeping positive.

“You put in a facility like this ... it’s devastating,” Hill said. “But I really believe it will come around. The administrative staff here is phenomenal, and I have no doubt they’ll take care of the issues.”

For three years, the two have owned a shuttle service, Aviation Transportation, and spent much of their time driving golfers back and forth between the airport and Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

“There are enough major players coming in here,” Hill said. “Something’s going to happen.”

Inside the old terminal, Rick and David Ellingson, owners of Bargreen Ellingson Inc., Foodservice, Supply & Design of Tacoma, were waiting for their return flight to Seattle. Father and son make the trip to Bandon Dunes twice a year. That could change.

“We come to play the golf course, with people, with customers,” David said. “I don’t know if we’d have to go to San Francisco first. I guess if we can’t fly down, we’ll drive down.”

“It’s a seven-hour drive if we come,” his father said.

Rick said losing the Portland connection would be a blow.

“It’s the only thing that comes here,” he said.

A North Bend man, who was waiting for someone to arrive on an afternoon flight, said it was poor planning to build the new terminal and to add the flights between North Bend and San Francisco.

“Who’s going to go to San Francisco?” asked Bill Lemoine, who taught at Southwestern Oregon Community College for 29 years.

“Portland is the big draw,” he said. “To take away the Portland flight is a tragedy.”

Lemoine said he flies to Dallas every winter to see his daughter.

“Every time I’ve flown, it’s been pretty full,” he said.

“We’re all shaking our heads,” he said, of himself and his friends. “Local people say, ‘Wow, what’s happened?’”

Airport Executive Director Gary LeTellier said he and the airport district commissioners are working hard to keep the flights to Portland.

“We’re looking at some options that could benefit us. I don’t want people to be discouraged. We’re going to mitigate this,” he said.

On a dark note, LeTellier said dealing with the high fuel prices — $5 per gallon today compared to $2 per gallon a year ago — is the worst experience airlines have ever had, by far.

“I predict more smaller airports will lose service unless something can be done about fuel prices,” he said. “We have to do something before something can be done at the national level.”

One interview it is mostly business travelers, the next it is golfers. It just depends on the time of day you ask them and who they are talking to. Go back and look at some of the other news reports. How can you trust anything they say. I have a growing list of opposing statements made by Lehman and LeTellier.

Hey Carl! I realize you may have been in a coma for the past 30 years, but the “airport” was here l-o-n-g before Bandon Dunes was even a twinkle in Mike Keiser’s eye. Now, if it is the terminal building you are talking about, I believe you might want to re-think your information. Do many (if not most) passengers on Horizon and SkyWest flights come through SORA on their way to play golf? YES The airport and new terminal make it more convenient for them and for the rest of us who fly from here.

So, you want to go to New York to visit your favorite café. Have I got a deal for you…

And, Earl…watch your words! With the updated domestic surveillance laws now in place, comments that include “blow-up” and “airport” could get you in a heap of trouble.

You guys are right on with your assessments of the bay area. People might not like to hear the harshness but the truth always hurts. There is so much potential in that area and people prevent success. We've blown SO MANY opportunities to improve the economy in this area. I'm a positive guy but I see no hope for this area at all. I had to move so I could support my family and give my kids more opportunity to become better educated by seeing economic growth. Coos Bay/North Bend just has never caught on to success.

Quit B@#$^ing and go to college, get a real job or see the outside world. These winners are the reason the few decent smart people who live there won't be able to fly to Portland anymore. Nobody has solutions, they just complain and blame everything on democrats, the city council or "golfers." Maybe they should realize a town made up of 90% undereducated morons like themselves will never accomplish anything. No wonder why most of the "honor roll" children there move away after high school...

It's funny to hear you people blame everyone else for your financial problems. As a outsider it's obvious why Horizon or any other business wants to leave here. This is a scum bag town filled with low life white trash people. You people CHOSE to make your town this way. Until you people choose to take some pride in yourself, loose some weight and act normal and not rude as ever then you just might attract some business like a lot of other towns north of here have. So next time you complain about the economic situation in this region look in the mirror. Poor people don't have to be white trash dirt bags!

From a Sawmill Family wrote on Jul 3, 2008 4:56 PM:

I grew up here through the 70's and 80's and my father always worked in a sawmill. I really don't see why citizens here are such huge defenders of sawmills. The ones my father worked in were always either laying people off, shutting down, or closing for extended periods of time. To be blunt...it sucked. There was just no security being in that occupation. So, it was no better back when there were 16 sawmills than it is now with just a few of them. I for one despise the mills just because they're so unpredictable. You may make good wages while your there but is it worth not knowing how long you'll be working? Or getting told a month before Christmas that you won't be working the entire month of December (because that did just happen this year). Gee, Merry Christmas Mill Workers (that's sarcasm btw).

Resident wrote on Jul 3, 2008 12:17 PM:

In 1977 there were 16 sawmills here, supporting lots of families. Now there are 2 sawmills here. Bandon Dunes is okay, but it doesn't support the families that those sawmills did. For proof, just check the enrollment statistics in our schools.

I do agree that elections DO matter. Unfortunately, at the time I felt it would be best to go with experience. Nothing against Laurie and Allen Todd, they just did not have any experience for voters to put their trust in them. They weren't really qualified to run. No prior professional experience. I think the voters went the way they did because of that.
Not that we got a great board out of it. I certainly wouldn't vote for some of our current board members again. Who knows, I might even vote for the people who haven't had experience, maybe they'd be more realistic, honest, and understanding of the financial situation. Hindsights always 20/20 I guess...

Just a little unpleasant reminder to the voters of this county. We had three candidates running for the Airport Board in the last election, Allen Todd, Steve Jones, and Laurie Todd that made statements about whether a new terminal was needed - they were asking questions and willing to buck the good ole boys and be good public servants. But, the voters PASSED on them, instead voting for the familiar names and the ones playing political re-election games, kissing babies and spouting the same rhetoric.

I'm finding it interesting that not one of the people critisizing the airport board has ever ATTENDED or APPEARED at any of the many open meetings held over the past three years to offer any constructive comments. They could have had all the information necessary to provide informed input on what they thought they board should do. Instead they waited until something negative happened so they can write and submit their knee-jerk complaints. Where were they when those attending those meetings said the most important thing the board could do was to get southbound service?

It is safer to land Horizon aircraft of any size here than landing aircraft at many major airports world wide. Google airlne accidents at major South America airports for example and get shocked. www.slackdavis may still have a great web site listing all accidents world wide.

For flight connections with non-stop flights, SFO might be a better choice, though.
My last flight to Chicago via Portland took 12 hours, and 14 (!) hours back, due to bad connections via Seattle and Portland. This could have been way faster through SFO.
