Flowers mark the spot where the wooden “Charlie the Tuna” statue stood on the east side of the South Slough Bridge heading into Charleston. There will be a “wake” for the remaining pieces of the once 8-foot-tall carved fish at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Charleston Visitors Center. -World Photo by Lou Sennick

It was just a prank. There it was — that big, blue fish beaming a silly grin at visitors driving across the bridge into Charleston.

Mark Santos and Marvin Terry Jr. thought they’d just take it — just for a while. They wanted to see whether people noticed the giant Charlie the Tuna was missing. Oh, the fun. They hoisted that big statue in a pickup truck and drove away.

But the joke went wrong, so wrong.

“We had planned to wait a little while and then leave Charlie in a random place in town where he could be returned unharmed,” they said in an apology letter published in today’s World.

But then someone found Charlie. Santos and Terry panicked. They had to move it. They rushed to the hiding place and tried to move it, but the chunk of carved fish wouldn’t fit in the truck.

“We decided to chop him up so we could move him. This was not pre-planned,” they said.

The rest of the story is in a police report. Coos County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the filleting fiends at the scene. Now Santos and Terry Jr. are apologizing. Santos stopped by Mel Campbell’s house Tuesday. The Charleston Merchants Association member had been lamenting the loss of Charlie. A devastated Santos wanted to express his regret personally.

Campbell’s helping the Charleston community organize a wake for Charlie the Tuna. But she said she was impressed by Santos’ grit in fessing up to his deed.

“Mark seemed like such a good kid. He was so darling I just wanted to cry,” she said. “This was just a terrible, dumb, stupid prank that went absolutely wrong.”

Charlie wasn’t going to last long anyway, due to internal parasites. The case of the missing tuna has brought some publicity to Charleston.

“We’ve had more fun, but I don’t want to do it at the expense of the lives of two kids,” Campbell said.

She said she plans to write a letter to the Coos County district attorney on behalf of the two and seek leniency.

The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Charleston Visitor’s Center.

The Charleston Volunteer Fire Department will officiate. The Wild Women of Charleston and the Tuna Guys will offer musical moments. Someone identified as Robert, the filleter, will say a few words.

All are invited to share their favorite stories about Charlie and bring tuna recipes.

Those who wish to picnic can bring a lunch.

The center is located at the intersection of Boat Basin Drive and the Cape Arago Highway, just across the South Slough Bridge.

Lapse of judgement? lets talk about the poor mans truck that got stuck at the beach and Mr. Santos was involved in totally destroying it before morning when it could be properly moved. Hmm im sensing a pattern here and I think this criminal finally got caught. He should be punished because one he stole the fish and two he would have never apologized if he hadn't been caught. I guess trashing and busting that truck up wasn't a "prank" worth apologizing for. The only way someone could have known it was way up river is if he went around bragging about it and thinking it was cool and that he had gotten away. Not this time Mr. Santos, this time hopefully you will learn a lesson finally and get a firm punishment. Dont be so FN naive people, judge the evidence not the lies.

So when did this story have anything to do with drugs or lack of jobs? We're talking about a couple of young men who had a lapse in judgement. Any of you men that posted snarky comments on here, You have been there before!!!! We all have, maybe just not to such extremes. So you can stop passing judgement right now because it only makes you a bigger hipocrit. And another thing, there is absolutely nothing wrong with holding a wake to say goodbye to a local icon. It's not costing you anything is it? And nobody told you you had to go so shut up!!! Just let us make light of the situation in our own way and if you don't like it, TOUGH!!!!

Get real people, it was a statue.
Worry aboout all the drugs and troubled teens and adults in our area.
This is a waste of time and as many said abouve it will mak ethe headlines.
We need to focus on making these boys accountable for what they did mistake or not. They knew they did wrong and should be punished.
I am ashamed living in this community when we care more about a dam fish that was ugly and old instead of our residents.

It would be very interesting to look back at some of the "PRANKS" these people did when they were young. If they ever were.

To mclovin

Your grammer sounds like you are on drugs or something. Do us all a favor and move out of the area

Tom wrote on Jun 26, 2008 9:50 AM:

If these two punk thungs would steal something like a wood tuna, they would not hesitate to steal you blind. Too bad they are not in jail and someone forget where the key is. To the two slimmy little punk theives, If you want to do something good for our community, move somewhere else, we don't your kind in our area.

I was glad to see that the two young men wrote a letter to The World apologizing for their crime. The letter was very well written, so I wondered if they had help in writing it.

I appreciate that Mel Campell and the Charleston's Merchants Association asked the court for mercy for the two Tuna Nappers and made light of their loss by having a wake for Charlie. It was very classy and funny as well.

Go Charleston! Hope you have a new Charlie soon for all to enjoy.

DOUG FIR
Or should I say Doug E? Why are you posting a comment in the Charlie story about your daughter? Let Charlie rest and give it a rest.

R U KIDDING ME wrote on Jun 15, 2008 9:48 PM:

You have got to be kidding me... Theft is theft... yes! let them write letters of apology, deal with the consequences, and move on with life...

As for putting flowers at the site of where Charlie once lived.. and having a wake..... ARE YOU KIDDING ME....

This reminds me of the high school shootings.... glorify the situation... and it's a vicious cycle that's hard to break...

Makes me wonder what else may have happened in our local towns that just gets swept under the rug and no wonder... per capita we are higher on the list for drug use.... YEP!! THAT'S RIGHT!! we are higher than the big cities.... NOW IS THAT SOMETHING WE ARE GOING TO BE CELEBRATING TOO...

TO AUNNA B....My posting was in reference to the inabilaty of the DA'S office to prosecute cases for what they are. This may have been a prank, but left without disapline the next prank may be more serious to property or humans. Its not me thats rewarding them for what they or other people have done wrong, its the justice system's failure. It appears you want to put blame on me ,for what these characters done,WRONG........!As for that Charlie chap,NO he has never done anything to me,NOR,HAS HE EVER DONE ANTHING FOR ME.Certain people need to realize its a peice of wood, rotten to the core, and surely, is not warranted to have a wake, flowers, and what ever else .Take Charlie to beach, maybe he will petrify and you will have him forever, just a thought...IDEA!!!!!!!!

McLovin wrote on Jun 13, 2008 1:31 PM:

I think that these two boys did a good thing that stupid tuna always stared at me on the wat through Charleston an dit just creeped me out. maybe we can put a giant salmon with a pitcher of beer in its hand where Charlie used to be. Thatr would be awesome.

Opinions are like noses wrote on Jun 13, 2008 12:38 PM:

Geez people! Lighten up! If you knew Mel Campbell, you would know she is all about having fun when it comes to celebrating ANYTHING in the Charleston area. If I were there, I would ask if I could preside over Charlie's wake.
Thanks, Mel, for keeping it light!

Joe Sixpack wrote on Jun 12, 2008 11:18 AM:

It's a copyrighted Charlie tuna that was on it's way out from rot and disease, So give the ticket out and move on. So what's the DA's office even involved for. What a waste of the tax's payers money.

I hope you're kidding about executing in Oregon for a day and that is what should be done to the theives. That is just the kind of hatred that has our hate crimes and other murders on the rise in the world today. If Charlie tuna was your life I feel very sorry for you. I think you need to "get a life" and while you're at it, how about looking into some anger managment classes. Wow DUDE, REALLY!

Linda wrote on Jun 12, 2008 10:36 AM:

I can't beleive that people would spend their time for a ceremony wake crap for that stupid rotting statue. That should be put on John Stossels "give me a break"!. You should have had a public ceremony for my Mother who raised 8 kids! Get A job!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh that will be big news for The World & KCBY. Maybe it will make our 2 cities come together.

charleston wrote on Jun 12, 2008 9:18 AM:

Not everyone in Charleston thinks this was a big deal. It was rotten in the first place and needed replacing. Let the "boys" pay for a new one or at least help with it. They do need to learn some kind of lesson, or the next prank might be a lot worse.

beebsie wrote on Jun 12, 2008 8:33 AM:

Ya it was just a dumb prank but, Geez you meany! What did Charlie ever do to you?

Citizen wrote on Jun 11, 2008 10:50 PM:

Perhaps they can build a better Charlie? That would be a great public service.

Why Bother wrote on Jun 11, 2008 8:56 PM:

I am absoultely appalled that the people that were responsible for stealing and destroying "Tuna Charlie" are forgiven so rapidly by those that were responsible for its welfare. The two adults - not kids - that stold and destroyed the statue were vandals: they destroyed property, they acknowledged so,and yet the ADULTS responsible for this piece of property say let's live and forget and in fact let's celebrate - sounds to me like they are their kids or some other relatives. What a great lesson for our youth - you make me sick. The two adults that did this should be prosecuted, fined, served a minimum of time, and then we can foregive and forget - not before. You people in Charleston are sick. I hope that you all starve: no salmon, no tuna, no crabs, no groundfish, no tourists just let's celebrate irresposibility. Good for you.

Margaret wrote on Jun 11, 2008 5:11 PM:

Just let them get away with it that's it let them get away with theft.. I hope all the other kids in town see it pays to steal... I am sorry but you learn at a young age not to steal.. If anyone wants to buy there BS story that they had to chop it upto fit in the truck.. They stoled it because they have stolen before and this time they got caught.. and destroyed a part of Charlestons history.. Discusting to even think anyone would feel sorry for these thieves. Once a thief always a thief I say...

Charlie was terminal. Do the wake, bid him ado, and give these boys a break. We have all done dumb stunts, I can remember back 40 or so years ago at some of the stuff I did. I just didn't get caught....and I am a girl!
Some community service, would be fitting.
I hear tell there is a new Charlie about to be spawned...so let it take the old Charlie's place.

Your kidding wrote on Jun 11, 2008 2:17 PM:

They did not confess..they got caught chopping poor defenseless Charlie up into pieces. So we are going to teach all the youngesters ion town that is it okay to break the law and steal as long as it is just a prank. Perhaps this is why there is so much crime in this area.Theft is theft.

jocko rockne wrote on Jun 11, 2008 2:14 PM:

I think a fitting punishment would be to let them build and paint a new charlie tuna ,, oh and bring some cupcakes to the party for the old charlie

Jimbo wrote on Jun 11, 2008 1:38 PM:

There should be legal exacution for a day in Oregon and they should be in the chair first up for what they did to Charlie the Tuna, he was my friend, my soul, and my life! Now I am going to cry myself to sleep now.

OMG wrote on Jun 11, 2008 1:30 PM:

Considering yesterday's article on the kid shooting Chloe Eberlein in the chest and only getting 60 days in jail (because it was an "accident")....I think these two kids, while I don't condone their theft, should have to just do some public service and call it good because it was a "prank". Anything more than that would just be unfair in comparison to the shooting sentence....

Wow wrote on Jun 11, 2008 12:47 PM:
