From homemade bubbles and recycle bins to electric car rides and yoga, there will be a lot to see and do at the Community Earth Day Celebration, scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, at Ferry Road Park in North Bend.
Adrum circle will start at 12:30 p.m. Those interested can bring their own percussion and join in. At 1, participants will stand and honor the earth for five minutes, followed by the beginning of the demonstrations.
Activities geared toward children will include homemade bubbles, Earth Day flag making, activities from the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and more.
The Bay Area Recycling Team will have two styles of recycling bins for the schools and people will be able to vote for the one they think best.
Though the event is free, there will be a few things
for sale. Food will include natural food from Coos Head Food Store, as well as a booth by The Lighthouse School drama department and more. F/V Pisces will sample and sell canned albacore tuna.
Information booths will include SoL Coast Consulting and Design, a company that specializes in alternative energy, sustainable construction and
environmental management; Unity Earth Care, from Unity Church; the League of Women Voters; Citizens against LNG; Free Flight; South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve; Women in Black and Peace Alliance; Oregon Optimal Population Society; Coos Water Shed; Cape Arago Audubon Society; Unitarian Universalists; Bittin’s Art Booth; recycling company Waste Connections; and the Oak Street Park Project.
There also will be free electric car rides.
The purpose of the grass-roots event is “to celebrate the earth and in celebrating raise awareness of how we can be ... better stewards of the resources we have and leave less of a carbon foot print,” and have plenty of fun, too, said organizer Char Luther. Luther’s co-organizer is Kevin Baker.
It’s not too late to help put this community event on. Those interested in volunteering that day can look for someone in a bright vest. Luther said they especially need help tearing down and moving equipment to Sozos.
For more information, those interested can call 266-0806. On Saturday, the status of the event also will be available at that number if the weather is questionable.
