EUGENE — Gov. Ted Kulongoski said Monday he is willing to go to court to make sure any liquefied natural gas facilities slated for Oregon are needed and safe.

Kulongoski was reacting to a letter from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission about state concerns over proposals to build facilities at the mouth of the Columbia River and at Coos Bay to unload LNG from ships and feed it to pipelines serving the West Coast.

The energy commission rejected the governor’s suggestion to conduct a regional review of LNG projects. Once it has determined they meet environmental and public safety standards, the commission said, it will let the market decide which projects are built.

“I have talked to the attorney general,” Kulongoski told The Associated Press. “I am going to look to make sure the law is followed. Though I am not wanting to go to court to protect the interests of Oregon and the citizens of this state, I will if necessary ask the attorney general to take legal action.”

LNG proposals have stirred controversy in Oregon, with some welcoming the jobs and taxes they would generate and other residents scorning the potential environmental impact and likely use of eminent domain to seize farmland, vineyards and forest for hundreds of miles of pipeline.

Energy companies have proposed building three LNG terminals in the state: one in Coos Bay and two on the Columbia River. The terminals would accept imports of supercooled natural gas on ships, reheat the liquid into a gas and ship the gas to West Coast markets through one of four proposed pipelines.

The governor said he was surprised at FERC’s position, after it had cooperated with state efforts to limit the size of wave energy buoys to avoid conflict with potential marine reserves along the Oregon Coast.

“They are willing to work with the states when they think it is to their advantage,” he said.

Kulongoski noted that Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and others introduced legislation Monday to restore state control over siting energy facilities, which was taken away by federal legislation in 2005.

He said he is not convinced that the LNG is primarily intended for distribution to Southern California. He said he is having state agencies determine whether it is really needed in Oregon and whether it would go along with his efforts to make the state carbon-neutral to combat global warming.

Update: House OKs Coast Guard LNG bill despite veto threat!

Under the bill, security plans for LNG sites cannot be approved unless the Coast Guard determines there are adequate agency, state and local government resources to handle security risks
I guess this answers one important question about the California LNG SCAM at Jordon Cove this is a terriorist accident waiting to happen according to the house members by a 395 to 7 vote (Obviously alot of Republicans voted for this also!)! Ole rich foreign investor Bob Braddock must be worried about his little SCAM coming to Jordan Cove now, since this area has LESS $$$ then most area's!

Key/Critical point in this bill is quote: "Under the bill, security plans for LNG sites cannot be approved unless the Coast Guard determines there are adequate agency, state and local government resources to handle security risks"

You listening Gov Teddy & your clones (Port Commission members), even the USA house knows this is a dangerous unsafe SCAM that MORE & MORE people don't want! Get your lawyers ready to write up the papers to SUE, unless you are misleading Oregon citizens about your threat???

Christy, there are better ways to get jobs (Tourism is the BEST fit for Beautiful Oregon) or energy/gas (IF Oregon really needs it?) then to place a LNG storage unit in a tsuami zone (Where a major fault lays ONLY 50 miles out from Oregon's coast, that has & will again produce 9.0 or greater earthquakes, that will produce NON-STOPPING shaking for over 10 minutes & produce up to 100 foot tidal waves)! One proposal has it coming from basins in the Wyoming Rockies to southern Oregon, thus unless you are Bob Braddock, project manager of Jordan Cove Energy Project, this makes ZERO sense to do! Say NO to California LNG

It's really sad that some people are so concerned about breaking their back for a few bucks in order to make transational companies rich, making claims about disenfranchising a proud working class when the land in our backyards, the water we drink, the air we breathe and the insecure, fearful ignorant society that is crumbling before us continues to degrade. What's more important, $10.00 an hour for a few people (with megaprofits going to the rich elite) or a planet that we and our children and our children's children can actually live on?

Why is everyone in this town against family wage jobs? Do you make more on State Assistance? As a taxpaying citizen I am tired of paying for those people opposing this LNG Terminal to stay on State Aid. Grow up people it is time to find a job!

Thank you for trying, but if the pro-folks like UNCOMMON SENSE (which is perfect) would get off their arses and edjukate themselves, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

To anyone wanting an industrial job...Pittsburg & Detriot are waiting for you! Just look at what those industrial jobs did for those areas...Great run down DIRTY places they are...

P.S. You pro LNG folks must be in the tug boat business, a union construction worker or maybe one of the Port commission members spreading the word on this California LNG SCAM?

People of Oregon have had enough of this California LNG garbage & it's showing MORE & MORE! Congrats to our state leaders!!!!

Now isn't that a surpise...a democrat lawyer suing a business! I thought that all the laws and layers upon layers of regulations were there to make sure that these plants are indeed safe. This is just a bunch of left wing NIMBY grandstanding by a man who has never held a real J-O-B like those of use who turn wrenches, drive truck, set chokers, crush rock, repair appliances, stock the shelves at Fred Meyer or any of a hundred jobs that help us put food on the table and keep the roof over our heads. Another loser left wing politician denying the hardworking middle class an opportunity to provide a better life for our families, because he has nice and cushy in Portland. Puhleeeeeez!

Common Sense wrote on Apr 8, 2008 1:55 PM:

Finally Oregon leaders listening to the MAJORITY of Oregon people that don't want this California LNG SCAM (Every newspaper/radio poll shows the majority don't want it)! Finally Oregon is trying to get it's individual state right's back! Finally Oregon's citizens will get their voting rights back! Then FINALLY, this California LNG SCAM will be GONE...
