Pacific’s boys basketball team took over sole possession of the Skyline Conference lead by crushing host Camas Valley 70-28 on Friday.

Every one of Pacific’s players was able to get on the scoreboard, with Sean-Paul Wagner and Brett Maynard taking top honors. Wagner had 12 points and Maynard added 11.

“It was an all-around good game and a good opportunity for everyone to play,” said Pacific coach Wayne Everest. “I still would like to be more consistent.”

The Pirates host Umpqua Valley Christian tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Cruisers fall on road

Powers couldn’t quite overcome Days Creek on Friday as the Cruisers lost 49-41.

The Cruisers outscored the Wolves 18-9 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t make up for an earlier deficit.

Days Creek’s Brian Zimmerman had a game-high 20 points while teammate Tyler Hays scored 13.

Jake Stevens had 13 points for the Cruisers while Kiefer Allen had 10.

“We played hard right to the buzzer, but we didn’t execute well early,” said Powers coach Matt Shorb. “Even with the loss, I am proud for the effort they put out.”

The Cruisers host Elkton tonight.

Sunset Conference

Red Devils win

Coquille edged visiting Myrtle Point 50-47 for its first Sunset Conference win.

Rocky Jones, Brandon Sampson and Joseph Savala each scored 13 points for the Red Devils.

“It’s a very big win for us,” said Coquille coach Dan Cumberland. “The boys finally started playing the way we can. We had a good game, with 13 assists and only 12 turnovers, and I think we did a good job of rebounding. We out-boarded them.”

The Red Devils improved to 1-3, but in the cluttered conference race, are only a game behind four teams tied for second — the Bobcats, Gold Beach, Bandon and Glide.

Garren Hitner had 19 points and Ryan Hamilton added 11 for the Bobcats.

Challengers win big

Cascade Christian jumped in front of Reedsport 29-7 after the first quarter and cruised to an 88-46 win over the host Braves on Friday.

Scott Morse had 22 points and Jeremy Cheney added 19 for the Challengers, who improved to 4-0 in Sunset Conference play.

“They’re good,” said Reedsport coach James Hixenbaugh. “They’re quick. They’re solid.”

The Braves have now played current No. 1 Harrisburg and former No. 1 Cascade Christian, and Hixenbaugh said the Challengers appear to be better.

He also was pleased with how his own team played, though.

“My kids played well,” he said. “They fought hard.”

David King led the Braves with 18 points and Jason Fishel added 12.

Wildcats clip Panthers

Glide rallied in the fourth quarter for a 58-54 win over host Gold Beach on Friday.

Elliott Standish had 16 points to lead the Wildcats, who outscored Gold Beach 21-9 in the fourth quarter. Levi Bonnell added 12 points and Marshell McCrosky 11.

Mitch McDonald had 10 points and Tim Young nine for the Panthers.

Far West League

Vikings top Trojans

Siuslaw overcame an 18-15 halftime deficit to beat Douglas 45-30 on Friday.

The visiting Vikings exploded for 18 points in the third quarter and a dozen in the fourth. Siuslaw’s Danny Barnum scored a team-high 14 points while teammate Jacob Mitchell added 10.

The Trojans were outscored 30-12 in the second half despite Jason Tingle’s game-high 18 points.

Bulldogs top Lancers

Sutherlin outscored host South Umpqua 25-15 in the second half on the way to a 49-44 win in Friday’s Far West League opener.

Spencer Hutchings was the top scorer for Sutherlin with 13 points and Caleb Trowbridge added 11.

South Umpqua’s Ryan Smedley had a game-high 14 points while teammate Andrew Nale contributed 11 points.

Sunset Conference

Panthers still perfect

Gold Beach pounded Glide 64-34  in Friday’s Sunset Conference game to stay perfect in the league standings.

Katherine Zuber had a game-high 19 points for Gold Beach while teammate Emmie Yeiter scored 15. Molly Hockema added 10 points.

The top scorer for Glide was Kristin Nelson, with 10 points.

Reedsport tips Challengers

Reedsport edged Cascade Christian 42-41 Friday.

The Braves outscored the Challengers 19-2 in the second quarter to reverse an early deficit. The Challengers rallied in the fourth quarter, but came up a point short.

Reedsport point guard Hannah Smith had a game-high 17 points and Brianna Ekelund added nine.

Becca Sellers was the top  scorer for the Challengers with 12 points.  

Skyline League

Pirates win

Pacific rallied in the second half for a 42-39 win over host Camas Valley.

After trailing 24-16 at the half, the Pirates turned up their defense, mounting a great comeback. Pacific held Camas Valley to a 26-15 score in the second half.

“The girls kept their composure,” said Pacific coach Tiffany Freitag.

Natalie Manning had 13 points and Jenine Manning added 11 for the Pirates.

Christina Carter had 12 points for the Hornets.

Cruisers fall to Wolves

Days Creek topped Powers 38-25 in a Skyline League game on Friday.

“We didn’t convert opportunities to points, bottom line,” said Powers coach Jody Cyr. “The intensity was great, defense was great, but the offense wasn’t there and you can’t win games without scoring.”

The Cruisers suffered from numerous turnovers and 5-for-17 shooting from the free-throw line.

Nicole Bittner was the high-scorer for Powers with 11 points.

Days Creek’s Stephanie Rogers had 12 points while teammate Rachael Walters added 10.

Far West League

Trojans beat Vikings

Jessica Dodson returned to form Friday night, but it wasn’t enough to lift Siuslaw.

The Vikings got a team-best 10 points from Dodson but left Douglas with a 49-34 loss.

The Trojans poured in 14 points in the second quarter to go up  23-16 at the break, then scored 18 in the third to pull away.

Douglas’ Stacia Blankenship scored a game-high 20 points while teammate Courtney Bush added eight.

Sutherlin tops SU

Sutherlin smashed South Umpqua 43-24 in a Far West League on Friday.

Sutherlin’s Tess Bennett had a game-high 17 points and Destiny Cowan added nine.

Chelsea Duffy led South Umpqua with nine points.
