Prep Recap for Sept. 18: Pirates top Springfield in league opener

Marshfield’s boys soccer team continued its strong start to the early season, beating host Springfield 2-0 in the Midwestern League opener for both schools Monday.
Gatlon Giorgis had both goals for the Pirates, scoring on a header off a pass by Chad Statham in the third minute of the second half and on a penalty kick in the 29th minute.
“The guys played real well,” Marshfield coach Tony Preston said.
“Our defense played strong. Idon’t think they got more than one or two shots.”
The Pirates could have been better on offense, though, he said.
“We had a lot of good shots we didn’t convert on, so that’s what we’re working on — finishing,”Preston said.
Marshfield, which improved to 3-1 overall, hosts North Eugene on Wednesday.
“The kids are real excited,”Preston said. “Alot of these kids, it’s their first league win.”
The Pirates last league win came in 2004.
Far West League
Lancers top North Bend
South Umpqua beat visiting North Bend 6-1 Monday night.
Carl Blankenship had a hat trick, while Jacob Grady had two goals and Timmy Wilson also scored for South Umpqua.
Taylor Strand scored North Bend’s goal on a penalty kick in the second half.
South Umpqua had a 5-0 halftime lead.
In another Far West League match, Douglas topped host Sutherlin 6-3 as Barra Brown scored a hat trick.
VOLLEYBALL
Tigers catch Vikings
Visiting Junction City took the final three games to beat Siuslaw in a nonleague volleyball match at Florence on Monday.
The Tigers won the match 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, 25-12, 15-12.
“The kids played well,” Siuslaw coach Amy Peterson said, despite the loss.
Shelby McClellan had 25 kills, Jessica Dodson had 14 kills and 18 digs, and McKenzie Mumpower had 58 assists.
Kayla Rauschert had 20 kills and 18 digs for Junction City.
Siuslaw opens Far West League play at Brookings-Harbor on Thursday.
Cruisers win
Powers beat visiting Canyonville Christian Academy 27-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19 in a nonleague match on Monday.
Nicole Bittner had nine kills and Kristin Clausen added seven for the Cruisers. Bilhe Marshall had six kills and Haley Patterson contributed 21 assists
“We came out and played hard,” said Powers coach Beth Rector. “We’re seeing a lot of the potential that we have as a team. We’re hoping to improve. It helps to get the win under our belts.”
